Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5 had some yogurt and a grapefruit for breakfast and got in the car to drive. Drank a good bit of water in the car hoping to be well hydrated for the race.
Event warmup:

Walked about a half mile from where my dad dropped us off to where the starting line was. Stretched out my legs.
Run

  • 12m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Ran the whole time with my mom. We lost my sister pretty quickly but decided to stick together. We did intervals of 3 min walking and jogging. It was pretty congested in the beginning and once we reached the bridge. We had to do a lot of zigzagging between people. Had to walk most of the way up the bridge as it bothered my ankle some. Ran the majority of the way down the bridge. Felt good until mile 5 where my legs were giving out. All this is because I hadn't had a run longer than 4.4 miles and 2 weeks off prior to the event because of shin splints. It all became a mental fight after that of willing myself to keep running. Pushed through as much as I could and reached my goal of finishing under 1:20.
What would you do differently?:

Train more as long as the shins are ok.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked and stretched.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

not enough training due to shin splints

Event comments:

Great race, great atmosphere. Had a great time and plan on coming back next year.
