Overall Rank = 311/447
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 40/47
Pre-race routine:

Wake up 2 hours before race start. Eat 2 pieces of toast w/peanut butter and drink some water. Get dressed and recheck bag. Pack the kids in the car and have my wife drive while I rest and eat a banana on the way to the race.
Event warmup:

Stretched back, arms and legs.
Swim
  • 14m 15s
  • 800 meters
  • 01m 47s / 100 meters
Comments:

My first competitive open water swim. I knew it would be hard but it was a little harder than I thought. Water was at a good temp. My breathing was difficult and I got out of rhythm and was worried about my navigation. Took in some water early on and had to calm myself and keep plodding along. Several other swimmers ran into me which made me think I was going off course but they were the ones having problems. I still beat my best 100M time by 10 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more open water swims.
Transition 1
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Terrible T1. Spent too much time catching my breath and putting my shirt on.
What would you do differently?:

Next race I will wear a singlet or no shirt at all.
Bike
  • 57m 47s
  • 27 kms
  • 28.04 km/hr
Comments:

I'm still riding a mountain bike. Looking for a good beginner tri-bike but we just bought one for my wife so I'm waiting until later this year to get one. Everyone flew by me like I was standing still. I felt like I was standing on the edge of a NASCAR race as the cars go by. The wind and sound of the cars whipping by. It was TERRIBLE! I saw my whole age group, and the next one, pass me by! I did increase my average spead by 2.5 miles/hour from the last race I did. Something positive at least!
What would you do differently?:

I would obviously use a road or tri bike! What idiot continues to race with a mountain bike?
Transition 2
  • 00m 53s
Comments:

I'm not wearing shoes with clips so this transition is usually pretty good.
Run
  • 23m 25s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 41s  min/km
Comments:

The run felt great. I decreased my time by 1 minute/mile from the last race. I really pushed it hard and made sure to pass as many people as possible. I made sure to leave nothing on the course.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and drank lots of Gatorade. Ate some bananas but the bagels were already gone. Once they were letting bikes out of the transition area I walked my bike back to the car and walked back to the transition area to check my times. Went home and spent the rest of the day basking in the sun by the pool.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The dreaded mountain bike!

Event comments:

I like Jack's races. No nonesense and no frills! The courses are well laid out and clearly marked with plenty of drink stations. I was really excited about this race because it was the first one that my kids got to come and cheer me on! It really helped during the bike and run and made the experience much more fun!

I can't wait for River Cities! Must get new bike!

Nice race. I fell your pain about the mtn bike. This was my first tri ever last year and the mtn bike about killed me and I experienced that same "NASCAR" feeling. I broke down and bought a Cervelo in march and it feels like I am on a Ferrari comapred to that mtn bike. I too am doing river cities, let me know if you ever want to go for a ride around here.
