So living in Long Beach is great for living, but not so much the best for training, no hills at all.  Does anybody from the area know of any places close enough where we can get in a good, hilly ride?  We've ridden in Huntington, and have taken the trip over the GW bridge to 9w, which is awesome; but working out closer to home would be great.

thanks all.

Have you ever tried any places on the North Shore or SUNY Old Westbury. I recently contacted the LI Bike Club which does rides sat and sunday from Westbury HS at 900am. There website has a bunch of routes listed.

Hi,

I'm totally new but would like to get involved with triathlons.  I just moved to Long Beach last week and am trying to find someone to train with and get a handle on this whole thing.  If you ever want someone to train with I'm available.  Thanks

I'll be down a the Long Beach Rec Center this coming Wednesday around 3/3:30 to do some swimming and meet with one of my athletes at 4pm.

If anyone wants to have a swim buddy feel free to come down prior to 4pm and split the lane! I believe open swim is 3-5

You are going to have to head to the N. Shore for a hilly ride.  Someone else mentioned SUNY Old Westbury and that general area.  It is great for a hilly ride.

For running you have a 1/2 mile hill in Merrick, known as the Norman J Levy preserve, that place along the Meadowbrrok Parkway

I'm also from Long Beach and for heavy/intense bike hillwork you pretty much have to head north, unless you can find a day and a straightaway with heavy headwinds (semiregular in the Atl Beach to Pt Lookout corridor).

For running hill work we have the best right in our back yard- running in the sand emulates hillwork very well, and doing it into a headwind even more so.

For a great mixed workout, I like to run on the beach and swim in the ocean from jetty to jetty- one of the best workouts you'll find (inspired by lifeguards).

Hope any of this helps.

What kind of workouts? I'm looking to get in an open water swim every other week or so- but I'm not a super strong swimmer yet (doing laps I'm OK, but the open water scares me!). Do you have any other beginners with you (if you are doing a swim workout)? Thanks!

Hi Tracy (and anyone else who'd want to train with someone from Garden City),

Sorry to be late in replying to this- just saw it. If you're still looking for a buddy, send me a PM and I can let you know what my schedule is for the next week (generally don't plan it much further in advance than that). For instance, this Saturday morning I think I'm doing a long ride- about 4 hours. Not too fast. North Shore. Not too early either- 9 or 10 AM.

We are going to do more running strengthening things during our morning workout, however if you guys would like to do open water we can do that after. I am the only swimmer in the group and I don't like to open water swim alone. If you guys would like to get a swim in that would be great, we are going to do our workouts on Between Trenton and Brookline (east atlantic beach).

We can all figure out our times in order to stay together, some may need fins or circle for the slower swimmers. The water has been warmer, you can use a wetsuit but its not necessary.

Who ever wants to come is welcome, it will be fun and a great workout!

I was out there by 9am no one else was around so I went for a long run alone, I don't like swimming in the ocean alone. Will not be around Wed but next weekend. Doing the bellmore striders 4 miler on Sunday. Anyone else doing it?

hey everyone.  I am new to triathlons but I have been doing daily swimming workouts at eisenhower since i got a sfx in my ankle.  If anyone ever wants to come down there for a swim, give me a heads up, I certainly could use some company.

I swim there once or twice a week around 7:30/8 PM. When do you go?

I usually go in the mornings, because when I was not injured I would do my runs in the evening after classes, but I have a semester off starting next week, so I am able to go whenever.  They changed their hours, so I think it closes at 5pm weekends, and 9pm weekdays
