browncd - 2010-04-05 5:30 PM Nobody can motivate someone else. Motivation comes from within. All anyone else can do is give some suggestion or ideas that may trigger you into action. Here are some things to think about: First you have to decide is doing this important to you. If it is, then you have to figure out your priorities to manage your time to get in the training to make it happen. Next to help keep your training on track, sign up for a triathlon to have a purpose for training. Tell your family and/or close friends about this commitment so you won't just forget about it on days you don't feel like training. Then get your a** out the door and do it. Only you can do that.

This....

LOL--so true! Only you can get yourself out the door...we can nudge you, but only you can do the work it takes...and a lot of this is mental attitude. If you think you can't...you won't.

Yeah, as inspiring as that little quote is, it is true. And I'm going to do that.

An event is good. Once you pick one, get your training plan together  - remember to allow for 'life' to happen so that it's realistic, and then when the blahs hit - ACT like you have motivation. I have said to myself, "If I were a motivated person, I would go do my workout." And then I pretend I'm one of those motivated sorts and go DO it.  I always feel better once I'm out there and especially once I'm done. I have also been known to say to myself, "Self, you have to go run. You're supposed to do 3 miles, but if you just put your shoes on and do 1 mile, you can stop." Once I'm out there, well, it always seems pretty silly to stop, so I finish the workout.

I also think about how good I feel after the workout and how glad I am that I did it, and how negative I feel if I don't do it. That's gotten me out of a nice warm bed on a cold winter Saturday morning to go swim a number of times.

Oh, and changing the calendar color is great. If I miss my workout, then I don't get to log it and get my peach.

So says she who skipped her weight training workout this evening and will be doing it tomorrow.

I've been dreading my run workouts of late... I just remember what my ultimate goal is, and how I always feel amazing after I get the workout in.

Races help keep the motivation high as well.

It happens to me sometimes/often too Lauren.  Keep your head up.  I like the advice of signing up for a race...that way you have a goal to work towards.  Also, remember to log your workouts.  I like looking back at mine to see how much time/distance I put in (I particularly like the graphs).  I just started last year (did 2 sprints).  Trying to do more this year and hopefully an Olympic too but I need the motivation as well from time to time.

That's why I said just put a pair of shoes on and see what happens. If you get them on and even just hoof it around the block, chances are the rest of the workout will get done--and even if it doesn't, you got out and did something!!!

BTW ... my mentor group is open for business and you are more than welcome to join.

One day you will NOT be able to run or train. It will not even be a question of motivation.  Your body simply will not be able to do it.   Think about that when you should train.  You GET to RUN!  Enjoy it while you can.

"There will be a day when I cannot run, TODAY is NOT that day!"

staying motivated all the time is hard.  work, kids, family... training becomes a chore instead of fun.  I am almost always motivated by the stories of others who overcome things I could never imagine.  Here is a great one for you: http://www.challengedathletes.org/athletes_stories/Rudy_Garcia.htm You'll get your mojo back.

So true, it's amazing how it's so easy to take this feeling for granted, and now I realize, how much of a blessing it is that I can run, that is really motivational for me. Thank you for pointing that out to me.
