I'm a very selective fan of "metal". It really depends on the sub-genre and band.

I don't get speed metal or rap metal. I absolutely love Horror metal like Danzig and White Zombie/Rob Zombie.

I also like many of the classic metal bands like Judas Priest, Ozzy/Dio/Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden. And I love some of the hair metal stuff just because it's good, cheesy, fun music (Ratt, Poison, etc.)

All the "complex" metal with the multiple time signature changes and long bridges and what-not just leaves me flat.

When I listen to metal, I just want a good solid riff with a heavy beat and go.

Sharyn5 - 2010-04-22 12:28 PM The whole scheme of guitar playing has changed now...the riffs are harder...more challenging...lots of finger tapping...Van Halen actually started that, they should get the credit. But, newer bands that my daughter likes, it's all about speed and finger tapping...and complicated melodies. I like it, it's nice to see a change. Metallica still rules.

I love pantera, i guess what seperates metal i dont understand from metal i can enjoy is the quality of the vocals, the "growl" just messes it all up for me, and i have to agree speed to the point of mush confuses me.

I don't understand the definition of metal.  Maybe that's why Jethro Tull won a Grammy for best metal album years ago.  According to my itunes library they have Metallica, Megadeath, GnR, Primus, faith no more, Black Sabbath, Korn, etc categorized as heavy metal.  Thank bands like Motorhead, Prong, Pantera, and Iron Maiden.  Seems a lot of confusion with what heavy metal is.  One thing for sure, don't categorize Poison or Motley Crew as heavy metal! 
BTW, I really like metal...always have.  But there are some metal bands that suck it!!

See, you understand heavy metal just fine Death metal's not really to my taste either, but I appreciate it for being there -- along the lines of trigods's points about pushing boundaries (musical, artistic, social).

Speaking of that, cool trivia: Salvador Dali chose Alice Cooper as the subject for one of his sculptures because Dali thought Cooper's live show was so surreal that it was "impossible for viewers to have a conscious thought." To Dali, it was so crazy it was genius!
