Age Group Rank = 11/27
Pre-race routine:

Woke up.. Made coffee for the wife and packed up the car. Realized that I had no energy bars or really anything else to eat for breakfast. Headed out about 6am for the race site via walgreens for a clif bar and gatorade.

Got to the site and setup the transition area. I took all my stuff this time in a 5-gallon bucket that also doubled as a seat during transition. Worked like a charm. Went and talked with some folks and walked around with the wife for before we made our way over to the swim start.
Event warmup:

Took maybe a 5 min spin on the bike just to get the blood flowing in the legs. Then decided to test the water and swam maybe 100 yards just to get the feel. Began and ended the swim at the swim exit so that may have helped a little.
Swim

Comments:

Started pretty much in the front middle. I figured I'd take it out really strong to avoid crowd.. That worked.. Went pretty fast out to the first bouy and was feeling pretty good.. after rounding I started to get winded and switched from alternating my breaths to breathing every other stroke.. This isn't something I'd been doing in training and that showed a little later on.

After rounding the second bouy to head back in I was feeling better so I went back to alternating my breaths and realized that my rythym was WAY off. After switching I felt much more smooth in the water and took it on in to the exit ramp that way.
What would you do differently?:

Probably not go out quite so fast and try and keep alternating my breaths so I don't loose my rythym. I also need to work on my sighting.
Transition 1
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Transition was 1000% improved from last time mostly due to my new tri top and tri shoes. We had to rack by number and my rack was the second from the swim /bike in and waaaay away from the bike run out. Didn't have too much trouble finding my bike and big orange home depot bucket.. I was pretty lucky to be racked so close to the entrance.
What would you do differently?:

I'm gonna try and learn to ride with no socks as that will drop 15 seconds off my T1 time. (although i'm not too concerned about that) I also might try and do the clip-the-shoes-on-the-bike-first routine and try the running start. Right now though I'd probably be better off spending my time on the bike and running..
Bike
  • 58m 21s
  • 18 miles
  • 18.51 mile/hr
Comments:

I thought I rode pretty well for me. I had a faster average than my last Tri and it was 10 miles shorter. I probably could have had more to drink and I probably pushed a little hard but I was having fun and didn't want to slow down!! :)
What would you do differently?:

RIDE LOTS MORE! I've got tons of work to do here.. My next tri is in about 5 weeks.. I'm gonna consider some aero bars before it. I really just need to stay in the saddle. oh.. and those extra 30 or 40 lbs hanging around probably aren't helping things either.
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

I un-velcroed my shoes heading in and the plan was to slip out of them just before I dismounted. One sliped out and the other came unclipped.. oh well. no harm done. slipped the shoes of.. off with the helmet.. on with the running shoes and race belt and off to the raced.. My stupid arse basically sprinted to the other end of the transition area and out onto the run course..
What would you do differently?:

Not run quite so fast at first and practice getting out of my shoes before dismount..
Run
  • 30m 43s
  • 3 miles
  • 10m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

HOLY CRAP I suck at this part... Things got a little hot and my legs got really heavy really quickly.. nothing much to say other than I didn't do as well as i'd hoped to do (probalby due to the bike leg and not having run as much as I should have). I stopped to walk at the water station both times I passed it..but not for too long..
What would you do differently?:

Loose 30 lbs and not run so dang fast out of transition..
Post race
Warm down:

huffed and puffed and drank some water and gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my FAT arse and me not running as much as I should be.

Event comments:

I had a blast and certianly want to do this one again next year. I think now that my training plan is over I'm gonna start a 3x balanced and drop one of the swim days. I gotta RIDE LOTS and RUN LOTS!!

Course: We turned from the transition area and rode down the dam towards the back of the property on what turned out to be a construction road. (the Tri was held in a golf course community) There was no construction traffic but there was no doubt that it had been there. There were some nasty nasty spots of pavement and a good number of holes. There were cones and some spray paint on the road marking out the junk so that was quite helpful. We turned off the construction road and headed down MS highway 22. Some small rolling hills.. nothing major. 9 miles out to the turn-around.

Nice race! Sounds like you had a good time.  Just keep running, you'll get there. I've almost dropped a minute from my mile times in the 6-7 months I've been running.  You'll get there!

Good race Will! You surpassed your goal by 5 minutes. Awesome swim split! Did you hang around afterwards and eat? I couldn't find you.

Thanks! Looks like you did pretty well too! how did the collarbone treat you?

I hung around for a little while but we the wife was getting kinda hungry and didn't want to have to wait in line. not to mention the fact that she'd been there supporting me for about four hours by that time..without a chair (she came with me to setup) .. We headed off to the La Casa De Waffle and enjoyed some breakfast.

We are gonna have to pay a little more attention next time to stuff for her to do while I'm off on the bike and run.

It was good to see you again!

I believe the race was 3 miles. I don't know why they didn't have us run that extra tenth of a mile. Your pace on the results page is correct according to this site: http://www.bx3.com/phil/tri/tricalc.php
