Age Group Rank = 1/2
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:45 and fed the cats. Drank some blue drink (Gatorade)and had some toast. We loaded up the car and hit the road by 5:30, made it to the park by 7:00. Pumped up my tires and headed for the transition area. Had a good spot on the rack, about midway between the the bike and run exits.
Event warmup:

When I did the practice swim in the lake two weeks ago, I forgot my goggles. Boy they make a difference in my comfort level. I felt really good as I warmed up in the little swim area. Race was a little late starting.
Swim
  • 17m 30s
  • 600 yards
  • 02m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Out of sync for the first 400 yards. The crowd wasn't bad at all. A few red caps caught and passed me. I swam straight, but slow. Got kicked in the jaw at about 300 yds so hard I saw stars.
What would you do differently?:

I need to work on not getting flustered at the start. It's just water and it's not even big water. Gotta find some speed.
Transition 1
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

The run up the gravelly hill was no fun! That was added to my swim time. Did not slip into my shoes very easily. The tracherous run down the asphalt hill in cleats made me overly cautious.
What would you do differently?:

Practice doing it faster.
Bike
  • 45m 27s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 16.37 mile/hr
Comments:

I knew the speed was in the middle going out. Headwind coming back, but I hit 35 the last mile coming back into the park. I felt strong, but if I got on the bike more, I know I'd have been better. T2 time is added to the bike.
What would you do differently?:

I need to press more in the middle when I feel strong on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Couldn't get my socks on straight. Finally headed out after stopping to drink blue drink. Then there was already water on the course, so I felt stupid.
What would you do differently?:

Listen to the race director who said there was water on the run...then I wouldn't have taken so much time to drink in T2.
Run
  • 33m 44s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 45s  min/km
Comments:

We looped through 2 campgrounds and there was one little boy sitting on the edge of the road. I waved hi to him and he said, "Well, you're not last." The run on the off road path to the finish was sort of rough, I heard the girl behind me twist her ankle. Then up the hill and I was strong.
What would you do differently?:

More bricks. SPEEDWORK!
Post race
Warm down:

I felt good at the end, which means I didn't push hard enough. Walked around, got some water, finished all the blue drink.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I have no idea what I was saving my strength for. Should have pushed harder.

Event comments:

I had to leave before the awards ceremony. Bummer. I hate it when they say it's going to start in 20 minutes and 45 minutes later they say it's going to start in 5 minutes. I finally had to leave and they hadn't posted the times for my pokey self yet. Anyway, I had a good time.

Congratulations on a great race; I did it also, but didn't do quite as well as you did - you probably passed me on the run!
