Yosemite-High Sierra Camps

My wife has put together a trip to the high Sierra camps in Yosemite for this July. Has anyone done this before? I guess it is like backcountry backpacking without having to haul a tent and food. Ideal for us with 10 and 12 yr old girls in tow. Just wondering how the food and overall experience was for anyone who has done it before. Any tips on side trips from the camps would be appreciated as well, specifically Merced Lake to Half Dome.
