Sunny
Total Time = 1h 00m 41s
Overall Rank = 14/144
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 4/
Pre-race routine:

Up early...porridge for breakfast along with some water.

On the drive to the race I had a banana and a bottle of Powerade.
Event warmup:

Out and back run on the start/finish hill...about a mile total.
Run
  • 13m 15s
  • 2 miles
  • 06m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

Quite a good run actually. Well paced, nothing uncomfortable.
Transition 1
  • 00m 39s
Comments:

T1 was pretty good, got helmet on, shoes on, and ready to go in good order. Got out of transition right behind somebody who was having problems clipping in...cut me off a couple of times weaving...
Bike
  • 30m 33s
  • 11.2 miles
  • 22.00 mile/hr
Comments:

The ride was MUCH harder than I expected it to be...I put it down to the heat but later found that wasn't the case.

When I'd put my front wheel on I hadn't done the skewer up as tight as normal (conscious decision on my part)...the front wheel had a little bit of movement and was rubbing on one brake block for the entire ride!

This means I was actually riding pretty well. 22mph average with the brakes one! But it also meant I spent much more energy than I should have and would suffer for it on the second run.

I was also uncomfortable on the saddle for a lot of the ride...I might switch back to my Adamo saddle and see how it feels again....maybe a break from it and some adjustment will make it feel good again!

Passed 8 people maybe, got passed by 2.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure the wheels are my normal tightness (damned tight).
Transition 2
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

Got through transition quite well, but was cramping a little coming off the bike.
Run
  • 15m 20s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Cramping coming off the bike made the first mile very tough...lots of walking breaks! Finally got myself going properly towards the end of mile 1 and ran most of mile 2.

One walking section on mile 2 when I knew I wasn't going to lose a place or gain one. Second mile was about 7 mins, the first 8:20.
What would you do differently?:

Sort out the bike...more regular brick workouts at race pace.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking around...drinking water and beer (well Michelob Ultra...pretty much water too)...cookies and watermelon too.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Brakes!!

Event comments:

I actually felt decent at the end of this race even though I suffered pretty badly on the bike then more so on the second run. Once I realized a brake block had been rubbing (went to unrack my bike and it was hard to roll!).

Since the last race (a month ago) I've been sick for 3 weeks!! Whilst that wasn't 3 weeks without training, the training was very limited...on the race bike once since the last race...

With that in mind I finished in almost the same time as last year so was a good result!

Good race considering the brake pad rubbing. I so wanted to do this race but im have a ton of issues with both my ankles and as bad as i dont want to I really need to recover. For some reason when Im racing and notice my pace is not on point I always look down and check my front brake pads to see if they are rubbing. One race this was the case and usually a quick fix is to just pull the lever up to loosen the brakes the way you take off your wheel and it will prevent the pad from rubbing while riding. Other times it is just an unnoticable headwind or a false  flat that slows me down which is usually the case.
