Age Group Rank = 1/4
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 0600, ate oatmeal and a CLIF bar, drank water.

Got stuff ready, drove to race, leaving at 0730, arrive 0800, drinking water and gatorade the entire drive.

Picked up race shirt/number, changed, used bathroom, waited around til race start at 0935, drank a 5 hour energy to get hyped up.

Stretched and talked to other triathletes to get a feel for the competition.

Event warmup:

Nothing other than walking around.
Swim
  • 10m 8s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was in the top 5 of 72 people, so it was wierd being in the lead pack. I was thinking that I was off course or something, but I guess that swim training pays off. No one really to draft off of. This was my favorite part of this race.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really, I'm glad there was no one to draft off of, because I was in the front.
Transition 1
  • 02m 35s
Comments:

Wasted at least 30 seconds in T1 putting a tight bike jersey on, which just came off on the run. Everyone else's T1 was about a whole minute faster.
What would you do differently?:

Not wear a bike jersey? Idk,that sun was hot, and I got burned from the run course and chilling afterwards in the sun.
Bike
  • 35m 16s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 21.10 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt strong, I knew I had to hammer it here because the run in 90 degree heat was going to suck. If the roads were smoother and the headwind on the way back weren't so bad, I would have been a lot stronger.

No hills though.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. I took advantage of the tailwind, and tried to hold a strong pace with the headwind.
Transition 2
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

Eh, I didn't mess up on anything, but a lot of people were 10-20 seconds faster. Maybe getting YANKZ would be worth it, idk.
What would you do differently?:

Get YANKZ?
Run
  • 25m 25s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

Horrible run time. Horrible.

Drinking Perpetuem on the bike, and then Gatorade at the aid station at mile 1 was a bad idea. The heat made my stomach weak, and I puked at 1.75 miles in, 3 times. I got passed by a few people in doing so, but after I puked I felt stronger and I passed them right back up.

A lot of people were impressed by my recovery from puking, but whatever.
What would you do differently?:

Dont mix a non-HFCS sports drink and one filled with HFCS! Especially in heat that you aren't used to.

Also, puke sooner. It will make the rest of the run faster overall, instead of slowing myself down to hold it in.
Post race
Warm down:

Jumping in the lake?

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mostly the heat, rough roads on the bike hurt too, as did the headwind.

Event comments:

Could have used another aid station on the sprint run course. They didn't know it was gonna be this hot, so a 0930 race start time wasn't good.

They promised to move it earlier next year.

Great job!  That run was brutally hot.  I was glad I wasn't doing the Oly.
