Subject: Outer Banks pools
Anyone know of any pools in the Outer Banks area, specifically Duck?  I'm going to be on vacation next week with the family and thought I might be able to squeeze in a couple early morning training sessions if I can find a local pool.

You have the 2nd biggest "pool" in the world if you head east of where you're staying.

(sorry could not resist)

And I don't know of any pools in Duck. I mainly go to Emerald Isle.

There is YMCA in Nags Head, not too far from Duck.  Check the website for their schedule, it is pretty booked up with teams and classes a lot of times.  Good luck.

I live on the beach and I love open water swimming in the ocean and the sound.  That being said, I don't suggest you jump right in to the ocean and attempt an open water swim by yourself.  Currents, tides and waves can pummel you and possibly drown you.  The sound is a good place to swim but you still run the risk of current and tide.  If you decide to open water swim while on vacation, do it where there are life guards and let the life guards know what you are planning on doing.

All, ?thanks for info.  I called the local YMCA in Nags Head and they have daily rates for their pool.  I though about doing an open water at first, but wasn't sure I wanted to do an early morning swim with no support.   I might take wojo14's  suggestion and do one where lifeguards are watching.

With Danielle and Earl ripping (pun intended!) through the Atlantic, be very careful of rip currents.

I'm a pretty strong swimmer, but got caught in one last year for the first time ever.  I had my eight year old daughter with me and it was very disconcerting!   Did the right things, swam parallel to shore etc. and ultimately made it out without any assistance, but it wasn't a pleasant experience - suddenly like swimming in wet concrete!.  Be careful!
Soundside is a good bet for open water work.

As for pools - other that the Nags Head Y, everything I can think of is private/semi-private.  If you're renting, very often the rental agency can hook you up.  The Beach Club in Nags Head keeps a lap swimming lane open.

Thanks for sharing that.  Did you get a day pass?  How did that work out for you?

DH and I are heading to the Outer Banks for a few days after BikeMS.  We're both looking forward to it!

Apparently the place we are staying has an agreement with Kilmarlic which has an 25 meter outdoor pool.  I need to get in touch with them about hours for lap swimming and will do that next week.  I also called the OBX YMCA and asked about a day rate.  I was told the rate is $15/day for non members.
