Total Time = 2h 58m
Overall Rank = 61/114
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 10/15
Pre-race routine:

I ate a bagel with peanut butter and drank some gatorade
Event warmup:

My wife did my warmup for me! :) She wasn't racing this one, but she want to get a workout in, so she hopped in the water and swam for about 15 mins or so before the race started. Then will I was biking, she ran for about 4 miles or so. Pretty cool that she was able to workout while I was racing.
Swim
  • 34m 54s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 20s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was pretty happy with how comfortable I felt in the water. My longest swim prior to this was about 1200-1300 meters. I was pretty nervous at the start because of this, but I didn't really feel bad at all in the water. I liked going in the last wave of the Olypmic, b/c I didn't really have anyway coming behind me. Plus, the field spread out pretty quick so I felt like I was swimming alone much of the time.
What would you do differently?:

I need to find a way to keep my HR down. In other words, I need to swim more efficiently. I'd love to get faster too, but for now I'd just be happy with a lower HR.
Transition 1
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

Pretty good. Should get faster. I haven't really been focusing on my transistions.
Bike
  • 1h 14m 49s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 19.89 mile/hr
Comments:

With this being only my 3rd tri ever, I'm still trying to understand how my biking pace will effect my run and overall time. In other words, if I would have biked slower say 18-19 mph, could I have run faster than my very disappointing 10:30/mile pace? What is the optimal pacing in each to minimize my time?

Regardless, I need to drink more. Probably twice as much on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

My wife actually took a picture of my tired ass actually SITTING DOWN in T2 to put my shoes on. How embarrassing! I wasn't looking forward to the run, though.
What would you do differently?:

USE SOCKS. I've got horrible blisters on both heels now. My shoes were only about 2 weeks old, so that and the extra distance on the run, should have warranted socks!
Run
  • 1h 05m 8s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 10m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Man! The run was tough. I thought I was going to be able to run 8:30 or 9 min miles. I was DEAD WRONG... DEAD WRONG. I can't believe I actually had to walk some of it. I guess I pretty much bonked after 110 mins at 88% of my max HR. Plus, after about 2-3 miles, my shoes were already making blisters and it hurt pretty bad.
What would you do differently?:

Pace better and the bike, and wear socks. I probably need to do bricks with a longer run component too.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor pacing.

Great race David! I was not envying you guys on the run course. I had my eyes on the finish line from a mile out!  Sorry we missed you Sunday. I'm thinking about volunteering at River Cities if the waiting list doesn't pan out. Have a great season!
