intro:  hi all, i'll be 49 next month, 5'10", 225.5lbs, 34% bf, and my diet SUCKS (i had a bottle of lipton green tea and two honey buns for breakfast)!!  i am tired of looking like shat, still vain after all these years, and living an unhealthy lifestyle.
started the C25K program (the app on my phone version).  today is wk 2 day 3 and i'm actually looking forward to getting off work and doing the workout.  i teach high school and we finished exams last week and yesterday was the last day for students so i've had some time to do some research (surfing).  i read yesterday where someone suggested that overweight beginners should consider biking to get their fitness level up and lose weight before running; makes sense to me!
during my "research" i discovered sprint distance triathlons.  i just printed out the tri-newbies online training program 11 week sprint distance beginner level 93 page pdf and registered at this site.
i'm stopping by the Y on the way home and hopefully joining today.  do i really need to wear speedos or lycra in the pool?  in my current shape, that would not be a pretty sight!
the bike is going to the shop tomorrow morning.  its been so long since it was last ridden that i'm sure it could use alot of TLC.
ANY AND ALL HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!
thanks,
mick

SEE YOU IN KONA ONE DAY!

hi,  I just turned 48 today! I started doing tris last year and so far have lost 40+ lbs !!!

so you've the right idea, just keep signing up for races and training your butt off and that's what will happen.

good luck to you!

Welcome Tat... sounds like me 35lbs ago.  Bike and swim (and walk) first sounds like a good approach to me... I ran first and wound up with some knee issues which took awhile to resolve.  Just finished my 1st HIM a month ago... wasn't pretty, but stick with it and you'll find the trilife to be a good way to go.  I've felt better in the last couple of years than I did throughout my 30s and most of my 40s... no turning back now!  Consistency is the name of the game and don't overdo it early with all the enthusiasm :-)

^That is great advice!  Let your body progress at it's own pace.  And get fitted with the right shoes for running.

I started with the C25K plan four years ago this week.  My only goal was to be able to run 3 miles.  Lost 70lbs in the process and have run dozens of races including several 1/2 marathons and a couple duathlons.   Have had a great time and made a great group of running friends.  Brand new to triSurprised

Getting off the couch was the one of the BEST decisions I ever made.  Little did I know it would impact my life (for the better) in so many ways.  Good luck!  You CAN do itLaughing

Welcome Tat!  I'm 47, 5'8" and down to 224lb as of this morning.  Down from my all time high of 260!  I just did my first aqua bike and I'm planning on doing more. You'll find a lot of help on this site.

As for the speedo/lycra question,  it's your choice.  I'll chance it to say, you won't find anyone here that will care what you look like.  The fact that you're working towards a goal is what everyone here notices.

wow, thanks for the kind words!  running for me right now is really no fun.  i had the cartlidge taken out of my left knee 31 years ago and the first two run intervals on the C25K are quite painful.

I do live in Wilmington!  We have tons of races down our way so if you are ever looking to race come to the beach.  We pretty much have a 5km going on every weekend!  As for triathlons, look up www.setupevents.com.  There are some good races in the Inside Out Series as well as the TrySports Series.

I'm not in the market for any ink right now, ha, ha!  My hubby has 5 tattoos though...never knew when he may want another so we'll keep your friends place in mind!

A 5km in under 30 minutes is an awesome goal!  Good luck!
