Pre-race routine:

Had a banana in the morning with 1 coffee and a bottle of gatorade.
Event warmup:

Swam about 100 yards for a warm up. Streched out as much as I could. I was not nervous at all.
Swim
  • 12m 36s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 18s / 100 yards
Comments:

Did well until I turned the 3rd bouy. The sun was directly in my eyes and my glasses were fogged. I literally could not sight. I typically pull to the right and I did not let myself down. I pulled right and ended up at bouy #1 and realized I was way off course. I then pretty much sprinted to get back to the last bouy and round it. This took my legs and breathing out of rythm. I exited the water tired. Need more work sighting.
What would you do differently?:

Practice sighting and not get too excited if I get off course. I sprinted and fried my legs trying to get back on course.
Transition 1
  • 02m 33s
Comments:

Wetsuit came off easy. Decided not to mess with socks and that helped on the time.
What would you do differently?:

Forget the socks on shorter tris. Had no blisters also. I am not sure I was going fast enough to get one. LOL.
Bike
  • 49m 34s
  • 13 miles
  • 15.74 mile/hr
Comments:

The hills in the beginning were not so good for the legs. My legs were fried in the beginning because of these.
What would you do differently?:

Train on hills more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

Pretty good transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 35m 8s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs were pretty wasted for the run. I was able to run the entire way but not at much of a good pace.
What would you do differently?:

Need to stick with training plan.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate a banana and some pancakes. Drank some gatorade also.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need much more endurance training although I am happy with the swim portion. I had no panic events and did get hit a few times but just kept going.

Event comments:

Nice event. It was well-organized and everyone was very accomodating. There were people at the turns to help you with direction and at the transition to help out also.

Probably would have been sub 10 minute had I not swam to the right and went back to bouy #1. This took me about an extra 100 meters to get back and around bouy #4. I did do well around the first 3. The sun was directly in my eyes after the last turn and I had a terrible time sighting. I am more then OK with time given the circumstances.

Started with hill in beginning and at mile 3 and mile 10. I need more hill training. The hills in the beginning fried my already fried legs.

Nice Race Tom!  Open Water sighting is tough and something most weekend warrior triathletes struggle with because we spend so much time in a pool with a nice blue line to keep us straight.  Training hills on the bike is the best way to get better at riding hills.  Come race day though, a few good climbs on the bike can torch your run, happened to me a few weeks ago.

Nice work, learn from this race to make you better moving forward!  Congrats!
