Does anyone do swim workouts in Lake Pontchartrain on the North Shore.  I know there is a group in New Orleans, but I can't find any information for the Mandeville area. I went out last week, but you have to go out pretty far to get in deep enough water.

Thanks, I will keep an eye out for them.  I was out sailing Sunday and got in the lake and swam around and was amazed that I could see my feet when I put my face in the water.  That is 5' or more of visiability.

I live in mandeville as well and have often thought about practicing my open water swims in the lake as well but never have.  I thought about going down to the state park and swimming from the beach but havent tried it.  I have heard of a group of people that would hit the lake up in Bush where they held the Crawfishman Tri earlier this year.  But heard its private property.  Working on finding people that practice up there and about getting access to the lake or contact info on whom would allow for practice swims.

Dawn, the state park is where I swam. I went out past the pier and swam parallel to the shore.  There were times when my hands hit the bottom, which throws off your rythym. I think you may be able to swim straight out towards a group of pilings and get deep enough. The problem is being alone and going that far out in the lake.  Also, I run along the lakefront in the mornings and noticed a group that met a couple of Thursday mornings and swam from the last set of steps (western end of lake shore) towards the causeway and back.  I was never able to speak with any of them.  Now that school has started I have not seen them there.

oh ok..thats good to know about the state park..ill have to try that out there and see how the open water swim goes.  Id like to stick to pool swims for strenght training if i can.  I live in greenleaves so i run in the mornings along the main road through the subdivision three times a week..then hit the trace once on the weekends.  I usually leave my sat for long bike rides which im glad to see we are able to get a nice dry weekend for once..got new biking shoes need to practice using them since ive never done clips before..but thanks for the heads up on the lake swimming..

Just a side note, GNOTri has alot of people (members and non members) who swim the lake on the southshore every Wednesday and Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

I've thought about joining them, but usually don't have the time to drive over to the South Shore.  Maybe we need to start a swimming group on the North Shore.

I'm not trying to scare anyone away, just letting you know.  I have a friend who is a district manager of state parks in La.  He lives in Fountainbleau State park and even he drives to the southshore to swim.

Not saying you'll die, or get sick, I'm just saying there is a reason hardly anybody does it on the northshore.

Although I sail over to the park and swim every couple of weeks, your point is well taken.  I'll continue to swim in the lake, but may have to go to the south shore if I want to swim in a group.  Thanks.

Why don't we get a northshore day on the southshore?  I know the area down there well, where to enter etc.  I'd be down just about any weekday.

Bye the way, I didn't think Hard Inc had anybody on the northshore??

That sounds great.  I have had some pretty bad anxiety in the open water vs the pool.

Good eye. I acutally forgot a shirt for a duathlon and borrowed one from a friend, which happened to be a Hard, Inc. shirt. After I soaked it with sweat he made me buy it. So even though I'm not on the team, I still advertise for them (Ha - that may not be a good thing).

How do Wednesdays work for all of you? Like I said earlier, they usually have a big group out there on Wednesdays so it makes it a bit safer when there are people around you. (not trying to criticize anyones swimming ability

I've been wanting to get in a long open water swim.

Does Wednesday 9/22 or 9/29 work?  How's 5:30 sound?

Thats what I want, people around in case I start to drown.  I think that the 22 is good. I'm waiting to see if I have to go to hattiesburg on Wednesday.  I will know on Monday.

I'll be there this Wednesday.  The red and black square in the photo below is where you can park.  I can start as early as 5 or as late as 5:30.

There are pilings which run kinda parallel to the sea wall.  1 out and back = .47 miles.  I plan on doing 3 or 4 loops (:45 - 1 hr).  If either of you want to make it, post here and we can finalize the details Wednesday during the day.

I have a meeting in Slidell at 4:00.  I'm going to try and make it after that, but if it looks like I will not be there by 5:30, I will have to schedule for next week. This meeting was last minute and I could not move it any earlier.  If I exit on to Haynes and come down the lake front from the east, will I be able to get there.  Are all of the bridges operational?

I think your best bet coming from the east would be to just take I-610 to Canal Blvd and head north.  They are currently doing construction on the Lakefront at Canal, so I have linked a map with how you can get to the swimhole from Canal & I 610.  Just copy the paste the URL below into your browser.

What is the water temp like right now?  I will be down in NOLA for at least Monday and Tues, possibly Weds.  My IM relay is next month and want to get some wetsuit practice in since the IM swim will be wetsuit mandatory.

Current temp is 76. May be a little warm in a wet suit, but not bad.
