Total Time = 2h 26m 18s
Overall Rank = 23/156
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank = 2/11
Pre-race routine:

Honey Nut Cheerios and a banana. TA opened at 5:30 we left the house about 5:35 and got into RPU lot. I got an end of rack spot on the 1st rack at swim in/bike in.
Event warmup:

A run, a bike and a short swim. I took lot's of pics in TA before the race.
Swim
  • 29m 35s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

My 1st loop was ok, my 2nd loop much better. I started brathing every 2 strokes on the left but later just started breathing when I needed to, sometimes every 2, sometines every 3. I was a little wide on loop 1 but much closer to buoy line on loop 2. Not quite as fast as last year but OK.
Transition 1
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

Good T1, 1st in AG +15 sec. 13/156 overall.
Bike
  • 1h 08m 29s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.77 mile/hr
Comments:

I used Andy's HED race wheels which are a HED tri spoke and HED disk both tubulars. I had ridden them earlier in the week and had no issues with the wheels during the race. I held a little in reserve the last 10 miles but not much. Top 15% on bike is good.
Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

2nd in AG +5 secs. 52/156 overall. I did put on socks due to blister issue on left heel earlier in the week.
What would you do differently?:

At some point this year I should be able to go sockless.
Run
  • 44m 48s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

After 3 miles I was right on a 7:00 pace, then I started to slow down some. Miles 4 & 5 weren't too bad but mile 6 was too slow. I had some hamstring cramping problems during sprint to finish line and eased off some. I think I needed to push myself harder in mile 6. Sub-7:00 pace in an Oly after a decent bike is attainable. Still top 15%.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of fluids. Found Barb, she had finished and cheered me on duting sprint to finish line.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Week off after Buffalo for BWCA trip, then some hard training on Mon-Wed was not ideal taper but because I knew of this schedule, Rochesterfest was not my A race. 4:30 faster than last year with less wind. Primary difference was bike time.

Event comments:

My wife Barb completed the sprint for her first triathlon. I am so very proud of her. Barb and her training partner Deb Zaffke have worked very hard to get ready for their first race. Congrats to both for becoming 1st time triathlon finishers!!

Great showing by TriRchester, 3 out 4 1st place spots and many other podium spots.

I introduced myself to Charlie Roach and had a nice chat with him. He is so fast if he is in a race I am dropped to sompeting for 2nd in our AG (at least for now). Given race circumstances I am pleased with my time and 2nd place AG finish.

Nice work, Mike!  I think the swim was longer than last year; last year was probably a bit short.  Thanks for hosting the party again this year.  Congrats to Barb and Deb too!

Great race Mike...with you and Charlie Roach  both born in '57, I'll need to work real hard to see if I can come in a distant 3rd sometime.  Congratulations to Barb for completing her 1st tri!  Great to see your family enjoying the sport together.
