Subject: What is the best way to test VO2 & Lactate?

This maybe an old topic that I missed but I am going to ask anyway. How do I "accurately" test VO2 and my lactate threshold? Up until this point I have been kind of winging it as far as training zones go. The only test I have done is the max HR test that came with my Timex Bodylink. I think to take my training to the next level I need to pay more attention to detail. I think the first step in getting where I want to go is to find out where I am at. What is the best way to do this? Is it something I can do myself or should have test done by a professional? In every Ironman training plan I read training zones seem to be  the focal point. I know this is probably a total newbie questions but any advice will help. I already know I need to get back keeping logs. I have been training just not logging. Thanks!

Establishing accurate training zones are super important.  Click here for a recent discussion on the subject that occured/occuring in the Georgia Forum.

(The Cliff Notes version is that the VO2max number is ridiculously unrelated to your training program, metabolic testing is just one way to ascertain your zones and that field test are pretty accurate if administered correctly.)

Really stupid question about the Lactate Threshold test.  When doing the 30 minute TT (Time Trial?) and averaging the HR for the last 20 minutes.  Is this as hard as you can go for 20 minutes?  As if you were doing a race?  Would an average over a 5k road race be a good measure?  I can't think of better motivation to run hard than a race

TT = A good WU, 10 min hard then hit lap button and measure the next 20 min going hard, like you're doing a race.

I've read somewhere (its been awhile) to  take 95% of a 5k HR average for the LT and 98% for a 10K.  For myself in the past, a 5k gave me an average 5 bpm higher compared to a then recent LT test, delta was only 2.8%.
