RacerRik - 2010-06-25 1:13 PM I'm in. Oh carp! First IM. First HIM will be this fall, probably Iron Star in Conroe since its cheaper and closer than Longhorn. Just started tris last October. Too fast a progression?

Yes...and no.  You only live once, so do what you want!  Just do the training and there's plenty of time between now and both of those races!  As long as your goal isn't too ambitious...

<10 hours too ambitious?

I'll jump right on out there and list my goals:

1) Enjoy the journey
2) Avoid training injuries
3) Finish with a smile

Ironman "purists" and those who are easily irritated by some of us rounder and slightly more "gravitationally dense" folks showing up on race day will not like the fact that I could care less about speed...but it is what it is.  For now, all I want is to have a lot of fun with this and beat the cutoffs.  And yes, it would be nice to do so when it is still light outside, but I'm not picky.

Just to be clear, I plan on showing up with the attitude and preparation to do my best...but my best just may be slower than most, and I am not going to let that stress me out.

That was just a joke. The number just came off the top of my head as being fast but not pro level. My goals are to do my best, finish strong and have fun doing it.

This will be my first full IM! So excited I want to puke! I did the Lonestar 70.3 in April and loved every minute of that race.

Anyone else considering doing Lonestar as a practice before IM Texas next year? Spacing is close, but it will almost be a "taper"... oh geez.. that sounds like crazy talk!

I was in The Woodlands for work this morning and have never been to NorthShore Park (Swim Start) so I stopped and snapped a few pics with the BlackBerry (sry about poor quality).  I thought you BT peeps might enjoy these:

From the West side of Park this is a Southern View.

This is facing East.

This is the North view ... Already pictured my head slamming into the bridge!

I am hopeful it will be a mass start and think it is doable from what I saw today, but it might be a little congested with 2500 folks thrashing about.   Really hope that bridge is not part of the course Smile

Yes. I'm staying at the Casa De Fry. Its a nice place about 1 mile from the transition area. Good food, but there are two seriously noisey kids that hang out there all the time. Also, don't try and call for maid service, it'll get you slapped.

I'm in as well. This will potentially be my 5th Ironman in 6 attempts

Thanks for the pics.  Now go take a video camera and drive both "speculated" bike courses and post the video tonight.

Seriously, the pics are a nice touch to help get us even more excited today...thanks for taking the time to do that.

I'd guess the start would be the same as CB&I, which is the boat loading ramp seen in this picture. So the bridge would be avoided.

I wish there were a couple more weeks between the races. That would be a perfect warm-up race.

I'm going to do Galveston. I'll be living there and it's just over 4 weeks away. It'll be my last big training week. Can't pass it up.

Here's my best guess how they'll do the swim course.  I really don't see how they can pull off a mass start.  There's just not enough width in the main part of the lake.  I think by the time you get to the canal, it'll be thinned out enough not to be a problem.

Um, John....according to your projected swim course, there are 3 feet of climbing in the swim.  I am NOT doing an IM with an uphill swim!
