Subject: Gravenhurst
I'm going the Gravenhurst Oly and was just wondering how the bike and run course is (hilly, etc)

Can anyone give me any insight or tips

The bike course goes through town and starts with a decent hill, it heds out of town on Muskoka beach road which is fairly rolling and has a couple of good hills.  It is by no measnd flat, but not insane at all. 

The run course is for the most part rolling, and out of town.  I cant remember if there are any huge hills on the run or not. 
They are both nice routes and it will be an excellent race.

or are there other oly distance events better for a first crack at it?

There are worse for sure.   It won't kill you but you also won't set any records, although it will be a PB if it is your first time.   Smile

It can be a bit slow getting in and out of town with alot of 90 degree turns that sometimes require almost coming to a stop, but it is a fun course.   There are some flat courses out there like Welland, Blue Water, and rolling hills like Binbrook that could be easier, but they too could be tough if you hit them on windy days.    I think you will have fun.

i LOVE the binbrook course!
don't think they have an olympic distance event though....
(i'm trying to pick my first for next year)

hopefully it doesn't hurt to look ahead!

Did anyone do the Duathalon in 2009 and 2010? There is a large difference in times, when looking at the 2 years. What were the conditions like in 2009/did they change the course at all?

I did the Tri in 2009, my buddy did the Du.
In 2009, the event was a qualifier for the Age Group World Championships and the number of places given out per age group was 5 or something crazy like that.
This year, only 1 spot per age group was given.
As far as I know, the course did not change. I think there was probably very little difference in road conditions and weather conditions from 2009 to 2010 as well (I remember it being a cool morning, but hot later in the morning and mid-day).
I am guessing that 2009 just got a lot more top Age Groupers participating since there were more spots available for the world championships.

The bike averages might be 1km/hr slower from 2010 compared to 2009 (perhaps due to wind conditions), so that would change the over times by about 2min at most.

This year it was also the Age group world qualifier, with 3 spots per age group.

On the OAT website, it indicates 1 spot per age group.
This was my reasoning for why less "elite" age groupers showed up.
I might be wrong though. Do a search on sportstats of some of the people in the race. See if they generally post faster times (then the race was probably slower)
