Subject: Hitch adapter
Long story, but my wife got a new car and it has a 1.25" receiver.  I wanted a 2" so the dealer said he would get me the adapter and a locking hitch pin so I can use my bike rack (with the hitch lock).  I am not real thrilled about the idea of an adapter, so am thinking about just buying a new 2" hitch.  Any experience (good or bad) with an adapter being used with a bike rack?

Other than the added length, I don't see a problem.

My husband used to drive a Lincoln Navigator, so the bike rack fit perfectly with the 2" hitch.  However, now he drives a Nissan Altima and he installed the 1.25" hitch (the car didn't come with a hitch), so we had to get a 2"  adapter (he has an older Thule 2-bike rack).  Because the Altima sits kind of low to the ground, the added length made the whole rack droop and it scraped the driveway as we were pulling out.  It also kind of shook around more than we would have liked.  We ended up getting a new bike rack (no adapter necessary) and are much happier.  I guess it might just depend on how high/low your car is to the ground.

We use one. No problems. Slight bit of wiggle, but the bikes are strapped on pretty securely. We store the adapter in the hatchback so we always know where it is.

I think we have to have it because we need the extension to get the hitch so it isn't touching the hatchback.

I have a Thule T2 and love how secure it feels after it is screwed down.  I wonder how "solid" it will feel with an adapter- that is my primary concern.  I use it on my Jeep Wrangler and love it.  My wife's new car is a Jeep Grand Cherokee so I doubt height/droop will be an issue.  Car was not on the lot when I bought it, but the salesman assured me it was a 2" hitch- turned out when the car arrived (from a dealership out of state) it was a 1.25" hitch.  Got a great deal on a 2010- so if I must replace the hitch it was still worth it, but just a PITA.  Thanks for the help

I'm going the other way, I have a 2" reciever and a 1.25"  bike rack.  I cannot for the life of me find an adapter that fits in the hitch that doesn't run into my spare tire.

I had the same issue but found there wasn't a 2" hitch made for the car (Dodge Caliber). I also found there are different classes of hitches with different load thresholds. Be careful not to put more on the car than the hitch can handle. My class 1 hitch has a 200 lb max.
