Pre-race routine:

Well, this whole weekend was a lot of fun. I had been injured and lazy over the winter and working long hours. And drinking tall beers. So, those are my great excuses. Overall, I'm just way out of shape. So, this weekend was a very good structured training weekend. For that reason everything went really well. Performance wise, especially against an amazingly strong field I was terrible. But, I didn't expect much better. The swims went well actually. The bikes were slow as hell due to me being out of shape and a very hilly course. The runs were not quite as bad as I expected but nothing to be proud of. But, racing three days in a row in less than ideal conditions and getting through it with a smile was a real accomplishment. I came out of the weekend sore and tired but feeling good and excited about getting back into racing. So, score one for me. I just won't be sneaking a peak at CoolRunnings very often.
Event warmup:

My tent was full of water and it was supposed to rain over night again so I put my bike in my tent and snuggled up in the back of my Jeep with a wet sleeping bag and damp pillows. So, that was nice. Woke up sore, wet, and tired but feeling oddly good. It felt like waking up in the dark of dawn at football camp again, pulling on a wet uniform, and going out for some punishment. Kind of fun in a strange way.

We did no real warmup at the Oly but we had more time for the sprint. Colin and I were on a little different schedules so we warmed up separately. I went and did a 3-4 mile bike and then a lot of stretching and some barefoot "sprints" in transition to get the legs loosened up. I was pretty sore from the Oly.

  • 01m 43s / 100 yards

I started out feeling great. I passed two people before they actually got into the water (time trial start). Then the bouys were different from the day before and the sun was right in our eyes. I got off course a little twice but pushed pretty hard and had a pretty good swim. 69 out of 340 in a good field. My one ok showing the whole weekend so I am taking that as a victory of sorts. One guy was swimming on top of me for about 30 seconds or so. There was plenty of room. I didn't like it. An elbow may have flown. I may have connected a little too well. On the run course I saw an unfortunate fellow running with a bloody face. Oops.
What would you do differently?:

Review the course again and not trust that the buoys were the same.
Transition 1
  • 01m 35s

Faster than yesterday. Still need to get real tri shoes and jump on the bike with them.
  • 53m 11s
  • 15 miles
  • 16.92 mile/hr

I strangely missed the rain. Racing in the rain was a lot of fun. This course was straight downhill and then straight back up. At least the Oly had about 5 miles of rollers to keep the avg speed up. Everyone I know had a slower avg speed on the sprint than the oly. I was no exception. I got passed a lot and was suffering on that long hill more than most.
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s

Sub 1:00. Can't be too upset with this. I learned from yesterday and got my feet out of my shoes before the sharp turn into transition. Hopped off and ran to the rack. Pretty successful. of course Colin did this under 30 seconds. Not sure how that is even possible.
What would you do differently?:

I guess sprint to the run course?
  • 26m 33s
  • 3.3 miles
  • 08m 02s  min/mile

Well, for being really sore and hurting on the bike I am happy with this. I went to bed Saturday night expecting to survive the bike and jog a 9 mile pace on the run. This still felt like a jog. One silver lining. I looked up my old races. I had written how I had a good run and that was just under 8 minute miles! Well, now an 8 minute mile is a painful out of shape jog. Progress.
What would you do differently?:

Not be fat and out of shape.
Post race
Warm down:

Same warm down as all weekend. Get a muscle milk, towel, water from the exceptionally organized race Colin get a first place AG Trophy. The kid absolutely killed it all weekend. And he can get faster. 8th place overall for Lord of the Flies. Only his second year, thinks he can race 10 pounds lighter, and needs to solve some cramping issues on the run. My guess is next year he'll be 1 MPH faster on the bike and 30 seconds faster per mile on the run. That'll get to about 6:00 min miles.

Oh, and I got a massage from Chrissie Wellington's therapist when she does Timberman. It was awesome.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not training.

Event comments:

Great race. I wish they could get the swim longer in a cold new Hampshire lake however.

Very good evaluation/race report!  I think you're pretty much dead on with everything.  I just need you to stay focused on your training for you're upcoming races and you're gonna do great.  However, I'm impressed with how well you held up.

Keep on training!
