Subject: Anyone ever try to alter a tri suit?
Hi!  I just got my first tri suit - I went with a pair of tri shorts and a tank top from skirtsports.  Being cheap, I decided to order online so I could order last year's suit for half price.  I was right in between two sizes on the size chart so went with the bigger one so I didn't look like a stuffed sausage, being an Athena who definitely is not in that category because of height. Smile

It just arrived today and is slightly big.  The top fits okay in the hips but is big in the chest and shoulders.  The shorts will probably be fine - I don't think I'd want to go a size down but they're just a tiny bit looser than I would have liked.  It actually looks okay (better than I thought it would!) but it would be nice to fit just slightly better for the swim.  I think it will be fine for the bike and run.

I'm wondering if I could at least alter the top a little bit - I'd like to take it in each side of the chest and also take it in a little at the top of the shoulders.  I know how to sew, but I obviously don't want seams that are going to chafe.  The seams currently in there are flat and I'm not sure how to do that or if it's even possible with a regular sewing machine.  I don't have a serger.  Has anyone done this before or have any tips?

First, don't laugh.  I'm a guy who knows how to sew.

I've done some swimsuits in the past and found that using a double needle when sewing the elastic in the waist and leg openings works well.  You might want to think about that on the sides.  Sort of fold the seam over on itself and stitch it up.  It should lay flat then.

Perfect!  I can actually do that without cutting anything, which was my big fear - I didn't want to ruin the suit.  I'm going to try that out and if it doesn't work I'll just undo it and wear it as is.  I'll post an update once I'm done and we'll see how it worked. Smile  Thanks!

Update...it worked great!  Turns out once I took in the chest/sides the shoulders fit much better automatically so I didn't even need to do the straps.  It's not the prettiest sewing I've ever done but nobody's going to be looking at it that closely - luckily it's hidden under my arms.  I'm only planning on using it this summer anyways in hopes that next summer I'll need a brand new much smaller suit, so that's why I'd rather just alter it to fit rather than spend a bunch of money on the perfect suit.

Thanks again!

You're welcome.  Glad that I could help.  And just think, when you need something smaller next year you should be able to alter it again and use it for training!
