Subject: 1 week before Sprint Tri but training for Oly
I have started to train for a OLY in mid-September but I have a sprint tri next Saturday.  How should I taper this week? I have been training 5-7 hrs a week for the past 5 weeks.  I also should mention that my left hip/quad are sore so I kind of want to take the load off a bit.

I'm no expert but I am in a similar situation. I am doing a sprint tomorrow and my OLY is 8/8/10. I am considering my OLY my "A race" for the season so for this sprint I really didn't taper much. All I did was no double sessions this week but still got in one good session per day and today (day before the race) I am just planning an easy 2-3 mile run to keep things warmed up and loose and some stretching. My focus this week to prep for the sprint was to eat/hydrate right and get lots of sleep!

GOOD LUCK!

There's two issues.  One is the importance of the OLY race compared to the sprint.  If you're just throwing the sprint in and the OLY is your "A" race, then I wouldn't taper at all, maybe take the day before the sprint as your rest day.  The sprint is good for experience leading up to the OLY but it's also a nice brick with regards to your training.

If you're following an OLY distance training plan you should stick to it as close as possible with the exception of the Sprint Race and possible rest day.

The second issue is the hip/quad pain you're talking about.  You don't want to risk injury and knock yourself out of the OLY race (or at least the ability to compete the way you intend to).  So maybe take it easy to let yourself heal, regardless of the sprint race or OLY training.  But the soreness may be just from hart workouts etc.

Are you sore, injured or on the verge of injuring yourself?  If just sore, take a couple days off and train through the sprint.  You will have no real issues.  If you are injured/almost injured, totally different.  You may need to cancel your race or risk injuring yourself even worse.

I'm in a similar situation.  Oly training for a race the first weekend in September.  I had a Sprint this morning and one last Sunday.  No real taper, just a rest day before today's race and an easy swim the day before the race last week.

Don't taper.  Take the day before off (or make it easy, as you wish), and don't do anything horrifically hard in the 3-4 days before.  The sprint will be a great training day for your Oly down the road.
