Pre-race routine:

Got up around 4:30 and drove from Birmingham after celebrating family B-days Saturday...Ate 4 boiled eggs, cliff bar, banana on around 5:30 am..also had 32 oz. of water..Got to event got a great spot on transition rack and went a picked up race packet..Got all gear setup and ready to go..
Event warmup:

Nothing really, a little bathroom time and talked to some newbies, just a little dynamic stretching, had a Gatorade pro 01 on the walk to the pre-race meeting around 7:45..
Swim
  • 08m 50s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

Got kicked in the face right at the start....rounded first buoy right on my left shoulder, then got tugged down on the shoulder by some guy..overall not bad but could have been a little faster..Navigation was much better was able to hug the buoys..(Time base off Garmin there was no electronic timing!!)
What would you do differently?:

Learn to get on out front and clear some people,,need to get my swim time down...
Transition 1
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

This time includes a 100+ yard runt through mus to get to bike.. sunglasses, helmet, shoes on sock less, grabbed bike and was gone...
(Time from Garmin due to no electronic timing)
What would you do differently?:

Just continue to practice these, learn to have shoes clipped in and get in them after mounting bike...
Bike
  • 35m 7s
  • 12.29 miles
  • 21.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Goal going in was 19+ average, passed some people on the hill climbs, then just worked my way through the field the rest of the ride.. Overall felt good..
What would you do differently?:

Get a tt bike so I can really get aero!!
Transition 2
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

Had a good t2 decided to go sock less on the run this time, racked bike helmet off, shoes on grabbed visor and race belt to put on while running..
(time from Garmin)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing to much, just run faster to rack the bike
Run
  • 28m 33s
  • 3.3 miles
  • 08m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

The run course with the hills was tough for me, I just tried to keep a decent pace, goal coming end was 9:00 min/mile pace got passed by a couple of people which made me mad then I just tried to keep them in sight..kept trying to push myself faster since I only had 3.4 miles to cover..
(time and distance from Garmin)
What would you do differently?:

Work on more hill climbs in training and try to get this run pace below 8:00min/mile pace for the whole run.. Overall I cant beat myself to bad since I did have knee surgery in Feb.
Post race
Warm down:

Some stretching, compression stockings on calves, iced the knee, plenty of water and a banana... Went to finish line and waited for my friend to finish...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really just need to keep on training and pushing myself, overall think I'm doing pretty good being that it is my first year racing..

Event comments:

Overall a good course for beginners, doesn't have timing chips, but with a Garmin you can estimate all of your split times. Just a medium key laid back race!!

Another great race Tim!  Congrats!

One thing I noticed right off the get go is how much food you're consuming before the race.  You're taking in a lot!  Especially for a sprint, you may want to consider not eating so much.  However, everyone is different and maybe that is what you need.  But just remember that you're body is not going to function as well if it is busy trying to process food.

Sorry to hear you got kicked on the swim.  Unfortunately these things happen.

Smoking on the bike!  And you've got the itch for a TT bike, huh!  Awesome!  It would be a nice upgrade for you, but is not essential.

Keep working on your running.  It will come with time and you're doing great considering the surgery you just had.

Congrats once again!  You're doing terrific!
