Swim
Comments: Pool swim. Crappy lane lines. Chop was really bad. On top of those things I have been in the pool once per week for the past month. Not good. I felt every bit of that, and right from the get go my breathing was off, horrible form, and I just tried to go as fast as I could go without worrying about much else. The 4:45 time includes the run from the pool to transition, so if I cut off 15 seconds of that my actual swim time was around 4:30, which puts me at a pace of 1:22/100 yards which is actually very good considering my swim training! What would you do differently?: For some reason it has been difficult to get in the pool lately, so I just need to get back on schedule. Usually it's never like that for me, so this was a good reminder how important it is. Transition 1
Comments: Helmet on quick and with the shoes clipped in already I was out of transition and off on the course in no time. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: This is my weakest of all three disciplines and it continues to be even in shorter distance races. I would have loved to grind through those rollers today but just need to get stronger on the bike. I definitely went out very fast and slowed toward the end, but overall I'll take it. What would you do differently?: Already thinking about off-season conditioning and getting stronger on the bike. Need to start focusing on that if I want to avoid losing lots of time. I'm always losing several minutes to the field on the bike. Transition 2
Comments: Couldn't get into my shoes for some reason. What would you do differently?: Nothing really. Run
Comments: My strongest 5K I've ever run. Felt good and strong coming off the bike and really pushed this pace for the most of the run. Only time I settled down a bit was towards the end when I looked back and nobody was behind me. What would you do differently?: Nothing, continue to build up my run. Very pleased. Post race
Warm down: Met up with some family and friends and fellow triathletes post-race. And then off for a 9-mile run with Mike and J. What limited your ability to perform faster: This race was intended to be a non-taper event for me. So all week I concentrated on my Ironman training and stayed consistent logging lots of volume. Especially Saturday's 80-mile bike ride and 20 minute run. So even with that volume the day before I had a good race. Without that volume I probably would have been faster and fresher, but looking back I wouldn't have changed a thing though. Last updated: 2010-05-24 12:00 AM
