Swim
Comments: My first non wetsuit 1500M swim, I was very anxious before it so to complete it in a slow but reasonable time for me was a decent achievement. My lack of pool time in weeks prior showed, but overall I'm ok with how I did this leg of the race. Bottom line is I'm curently a BOP swimmer and only hard work and more lessons will change that. What would you do differently?: My goals were to sight well, stay calm, combine breast stroke and freestyle, avoid getting kicked and finish in under 40 mins. I managed to do all of these so happy with that. Transition 1
Comments: The swim took quite a bit out of me and I was breathing heavily in T1. I slowed down to get my breath back and heart rate down. Put on Tri shirt after swimming in shorts took a few seconds. Long run out of large transition area up to bike mount. Safe mount and off we went. What would you do differently?: Not much, I think slowing down was the right move after the swim effort. Bike
Comments: My goal was to average 21 MPH. I came close and am happy with this effort. The course is fast and flat and set up to do a good bike split. I passed a lot of people in the waves ahead of me. The course has some sharp turns and you have to keep your wits about you. What would you do differently?: Overall I'm happy with this effort, a PR by 10 mins for this distance/split. The course played a big factor in that. I came very close to matching my goal for the day. Transition 2
Comments: Long run back to transition, racked and popped on shoes and race belt. Pretty smooth overall. What would you do differently?: Not much really. Run
Comments: This was brutal. I can safely say my hardest 10K ever and I'm just glad I finished it. The course had some shading early on over the first 2 miles and I felt at mile 2 I was moving quicker. The last 4 miles were under the hot sun and it took it's toll. There was a lot of folks walking out there in the heat. I ran the entire race, slowing down for water and Heed at each station. A cold towel at mile 6 was a godsend. What would you do differently?: I can't think of anything really. In the weeks leading up to this I trained in some hot weather and put in some solid 10 K efforts. On the day though this run was just about getting through to the finish line for me. Post race
Warm down: Met up wit Liz, walked thru the mist tent (nice touch) and had lots of water. What limited your ability to perform faster: I wanted to do a 2:45 in this race, and felt I gave myself a chance after the swim and bike. In the end I had to race the conditions on the day like everyone in the race. It was tough out there and I'm proud to have a hard earned finishers medal. I could point to lack of wetsuit on swim and intense heat during the entire race as limiters. I also felt I had nutrition issues. I think I drank too much before race started and felt bloated. I think I will need to adjust that for Timberman and focus on drinking during early stages of bike leg, as well as eating. Event comments: Great race, superbly organized. Plenty of friendly volunteers and I could have hugged everyone at each aid station on the run handing out cold water. I'll definitely do this race again. Last updated: 2010-03-11 12:00 AM

Up at 5 AM, did not sleep so great maybe 4 hours. Had banana, gel water and headed to transition with Liz.
A lot of waiting round as I got there 5:30 AM and my wave went off 8:10 AM. Kept taking in fluids, food and hung out with Elizabeth.
