The best lie my mother ever told involved the Easter Bunny. I was 5 and my brother was 3. We woke up Easter morning and ran downstairs to find absolutely nothing. My parents overslept (maybe they were up late trying to figure out how to change a tire) and didn't put out any candy.

We ran into my parents room crying that the Easter Bunny skipped our house. My mother, rubbing the sleep from her eyes, calmly replied "well, the Easter Bunny has alot of houses to go to. Maybe we're the last block he's going to. I bet if we get dressed we can go for a walk and see him!" We thought it was a great idea, got dressed and walked around the block with my father. By the time we got home my mother was on the front steps.

"Did you see him! He was just here! I can't believe you missed him". When we walked in the house there were plastic eggs hidden everywhere. I can still remember bragging to all my school friends that my mom saw the Easter Bunny on Easter and our house was the last house he went to.

I still laugh when I think about it.

This story reminds me of one of my favourite movies last year - Big Fish. Growing up without illusions and without stories is sadder than it is noble. A good story like this is priceless.

But then the kids become teenagers and you have to figure out if they're lying to you---
