Total Time = 41m 50s
Overall Rank = 12/137
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 2/12
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:45 and hit the road by 6am. Picked up my packet and set up my mini-transition. Ate a Joyride bar on the drive, grabbed a Red Bull and a banana at the race.
Event warmup:

Took a 10min WU run and a 10min swim...damn the water is cold in the ocean.
Swim
  • 18m 1s
  • 1000 meters
  • 01m 48s / 100 meters
Comments:

There were no splits being taken for this race so I can't compare my time to everyone else but I do know that I must have been passed by 30-40 people on the swim. I probably would have been 1-2min faster if I had worn my wetsuit. I was about 12th into the water after the initial 1000m run down the beach but judging by how many people I passed on the 5k run I probably got my doors blown off in the water. The water was definitely colder in the ocean than the bay around the corner where I've been training.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to swim faster!!!
Transition 1
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

Quick transition, no wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 18m 54s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

No splits for the rest of the racers but I passed 30-40 people and probably had one of the top 5 runs for the day overall. Turns out the guy who won the AG finished just ahead of me...about 50m. I just didn't have enough real estate to catch him. I was eating people up all along the way and he was next in my sights. He had about 100m on me at the 3-mile mark so I had 160m to close 100m...it just wasn't going to happen. I only ran 6:06 pace for the 5k which is a little slower than I had hoped for but not too bad. I should be able to go sub-6min pace.
What would you do differently?:

If I had known that 1st in my AG was just in front of me a little sooner I might have been able to summon a little something extra but otherwise I ran a decent race. Not as fast as I would have liked but probably one of the fastest of the day.
Post race
Warm down:

lots of water on my head and 10min of walking.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I SWIM SLOW!!!

Event comments:

This race is a memorial to a Navy Seal who was killed a few years back...I believe he was the first to win it. Since it's supporting auch a good cause they have lots of good sponsors and lots of cool door prizes. I won a $150 Hydrastorm Matrix backpack. They also gave away abunch of $100 gift certificates for Xterra wetsuits, Bolle sunglasses, cases of Red Bull, T-shirts, gift certificates to local restuarants...tons of quality stuff. Top 3 places in each division got really nice wooden mugs with the race info carved into them. How about that...a useful prize! This race gets 2 thumbs up.

Didn't wear my HRM.
Suit: Jammers
Course: This was a run-swim-run but that isn't an option for race reports so I had to go with a swim-run format. The race started with a 1000m beach run from the staging area to a marker where you then hit the water and swim 1000m back. I took the initial 1k run easy (and barefoot) not wanting to be out of breath before I got wet...I ran 3:37 which would be 5:48/mile pace. Sounds fast but remember we were only running 1000m. Straight line swim along shore back to the staging area. Water was only about 3-4ft deep where we were.

If I could only learn to swim I'd probably be dangerous.

Joel,

I know that you can swim. I guess you are thinking about getting a sleeveless wetsuit right? But I kind of know how you feel, I blow by people in pool swims, but when it comes to open water, I can just hang with them, but not blow by.

So did you get second in your AG? Any cool hardware for that?

It sounds like a fun race with great swag and a unique format. Congrats on the race. Especially the fantastic runs.

Well, I'm a MOP swimmer so not painfully slow.  But when I compare myself to the people that I mix with on the bike and run I'm about the slowest.  It's common for me to have one of the slowest swims of everyone that finishes a race before me...which means I'm recovering a lot of places on the bike/run but I'll never grab those top spots until I can get my swim up to the level of the BOFOP at least.

Dang that water is cold.  Our ocean temp is about 85 right now.  Just right for me.  You had a great race, it sounds like.  A fast swim time by many standards-but just not as fast as some others.  And then to get out and run a 6 min. mile is exceptional.  Keep working on the swim!  Great job.
