I'm still trying to come up with a way to be on the bike trainer while also able to play wow. If I think of something brilliant, I'll let you know.

I sorta gave up bouldering - not because I wanted to, but because adding 3 entire new after-work activities quickly ate up my free time.

Pop, ice cream, candy, sleep, a lot of TV, my sanity, fat, and a lot of my summer.

Tried getting my bike to fit underneath the desk so I could have access to the keyboard and mouse, that wasn't working. One day I'll come up with something....  fortunately, just like bike trainer riding, wow is more of a winter thing for me.

X2 .... not really gave it up, but I can only have 1 OCD hobby at a time, so my tying desk has become a spare parts, water bottles, race belts, etc,  desk until further notice.

X3 .... my local fly fishing club meets once a month and I haven't been since January and have only fished once this year.  There is no way to justify taking time from the family to sbr and then take time away to fish.

I gave up brussel sprouts...but I can't stand them anyway so maybe that doesn't count?

The only thing I can really say that I gave up was late night TV.....but, like brussel sprouts, it wasn't really a big sacrifice.

Like someone else said, I don't have much to give up.

I started eating healthy in January 2005, 5 years before I started training for tri's. That's when I gave all the "junk" - fast food, pizza, burgers, all sugar/sweets, fried foods, white starches - done, gone and haven't had them since except the VERY occasional taste of something (once or twice a year maybe or less - all that stuff tastes horrible to me now and makes me very sick so I don't want or miss it) For me living/eating healthy is a full time thing, I started 5 years ago and will do it forever, its a lifestyle not just a temporary thing in prep for an event.  So I'd eat the same types of food, training or not.

My only "vices" left are caffeine (one diet soda per day) and wine (usually one glass about 4 nights a week). I wouldn't give up either for training but I do limit both quite a bit more in the week before a race.

Wireless keyboard and mouse, mouse must be laser.  WoW is evil and you should quit anyway though.

My hang gliding and paragliding hobby.  There's only so much time.
I get in a flight every now and then, but not very often.

Mostly sleep, up at 4-4:30AM 5days a week and 5:30AM on Sundays (long run morning). Doesn't really bother me anymore, except that I generally wake up well in advance of the alarm and sometimes that means I start to wake up, but lie in bed starting around 3:30.

Gave up drinking Sat-Thurs nights as I have workouts in the mornings after and it just hurts too much to be dehydrated and sick. I try to catch up for the week on Friday nights

I don't give anything up.

The reason I DO all this is so I don't have to.

Not just for tris, but for my life right now in general:

Pop
Fast Food (unless with the family, emergency food, etc.)
Sweets (Mostly... I am still a teen. )

And Im up to drinking 3 bottles of water a day; A trade I made with drinking 4 cans of pop a few months ago daily.

ingleshteechur - 2010-08-04 10:38 AM Several years ago while I was training for my first full marathon I gave up red licorice until I completed the race (dh had a big bag waiting for me at the finish!). I have also given up diet soda while training for a big race, most recently I gave up all sugar from Jan. 1-April 20 for a goal time half marathon. Does anyone else do this? What sorts of things have you given up in prep for a race & what's the longest you've gone without a favorite vice until completion of a race?

I give up compassion and empathy for my fellow man until I have the opportunity to grind their face into the finish line.

Heh, seriously, about all I ever give up is fast food, and that's mostly for weight reasons.

I grew up in a place that had no fast food, so I never acquired a taste for it.  Giving that up is super easy!

I've given up getting to work on time.  Or at all, if I'm really tired from training.

But it's okay, because I'm not getting paid.  And no one else is there anyway.  And it's not like I left something on.

I think.

Hmm.

I gave up the following for triathlons:

sleep, makeup, long hair, high heels, late nights watching TV with hubby, movies (I can't stay awake), a clean house, a car that doesn't smell like a locker room, showers at home, modesty, toenails.

tcovert - 2010-08-04 8:25 AM  ... It's sort of amazing what things used to seem like "pleasures" (or even "necessities") once you've got some distance from them and realize they were mostly just killing you.

Amen!  Over the past year I've given up most processed food, diet soda, and fast food (I'd rather go hungry than go through a drive-thru), but that's mostly because, like others have said, I eat to train instead of train to eat.  When you are in your forties you need every advantage you can get.

I did, however, give up alcohol this spring while training for my June Oly.  I used to drink a glass of wine or beer a night, now I probably have one once or twice a month.  I don't miss it as much as I thought and now, wow, am I a "cheap date." Wink

I wish I could give up work... I just haven't figured out how to pay the bills if I quit work.

I gave up fishing when I moved from Alaska to Utah. It just wasn't the same.

I don't drink alcohol of any kind and quit pop years ago, long before I decided to take on a tri so that wasn't really an issue. Recently I gave up the lunchtime nap, reading, games, etc that I used to enjoy. Now I do some kind of training every day during lunch. I guess I also gave up sleep time since my favorite time to run is around midnight but its not a big deal since now I have more energy to do things. I'm also about to give up my favorite pants, the ones that used to be a little snug but now are about 3" too big around the waist. Yes, I gave them up but I don't feel like they were a sacrifice since I'm enjoying the alternative even more.
