Playstation, softball, lying on the couch watching baseball all weekend. The one thing I gave up that I sort of miss is that I don't cook big, fancy elaborate gourmet meals anymore, mostly because I dont eat as much of the kinds of things I used to cook. I kind of miss stuff like foie gras, béchamel sauces, Yorkshire pudding, giant porterhouse steaks with creamed spinach, and mashed potatoes that are equal measures of potatoes, butter, and heavy cream... Sorry, what were we talking about?

ingleshteechur - 2010-08-04 1:38 PM Several years ago while I was training for my first full marathon I gave up red licorice until I completed the race (dh had a big bag waiting for me at the finish!). I have also given up diet soda while training for a big race, most recently I gave up all sugar from Jan. 1-April 20 for a goal time half marathon. Does anyone else do this? What sorts of things have you given up in prep for a race & what's the longest you've gone without a favorite vice until completion of a race?

You mean you wasted the turtles I sent you?

This time around... I'm giving up Nutella. I ate too much of it before. But I think I'm overcompensating with peanut butter. Vicious circle!!

Foodwise, no, because I don't have weight issues and I eat a reasonably healthy diet (the occasional stack of French fries after a long bike ride excepted). But I have noticed I don't watch TV much, either because I'm too busy training or because I fall asleep on the couch in the evenings afterwards! Beyond that, close to the race, I try not to go shopping. In college I once missed the NCAA cross country nationals with a vicious case of the flu, which I'm pretty sure I caught from a sick person in line at the grocery store, so now I'm paranoid--I stock up on food, then avoid stores and other crowded indoor places the week before a race.
