Comments: I am not a bike racer. In fact, I only took up serious biking last year for triathlons. But as part of my plan to be a stronger biker I've decided to try to work in some time trials. This was my first, and what I learned is that it's damned hard to go all out on a bike for 25 miles. I'm pleased with my average speed, but not impressed by it. My goal is to be able to average 22 mph+. This race is also part of a multisport circuit I participate in, and in order to win my age group on the circuit this year, I have to do some bike races and some runs that I might not ordinarily do because they conflict with my tri training. What would you do differently?: Either drink no wine the night before, or a lot more so as to leave no doubt the next morning about whether I should get out of bed and race or not. Post race
Warm down: Water, water, water What limited your ability to perform faster: Just need to get another solid year or two of biking behind me. Event comments: There are two time trials in this circuit, a 20K and this 40K. That's about all the bike racing any sane person should want to do in a year. Last updated: 2005-07-19 12:00 AM

Pre-race routine really started the night before when - through no fault of my own - I got wrangled into a wine tasting and seven-course dinner. I was drunker than a monkey when I left and felt sluggish the next morning. But it was fun!
Rode and EZ 4 miles in low gear.
