I would like to carry something on my long runs to help with additional energy and electrolyte loss during my long runs, but Gatorade turns to foam in my Amphipod bottles.  What do you long runners use to supplement your water on long runs?  I am on track for my first marathon on Oct. 31.  I have had a few long runs where I felt I needed something other water to drink but when I have tried Gatorade and Propel they have been almost completely foam.  I doubt I need to get into the whole bad idea of drinking a bottle of foam with a bunch of athletes.

So what do you drink and how much do you carry?  I am on schedule for 16 miles today and by the time I check back here it will be done but I obviously have several more long runs ahead of me.  Thanks for the help.

Are your rinsing the soap out of your bottles after washing? I've used Gatorade in my Fuelbelt bottles for years without a foam issue.

Not always but I only would carry water on board for runs over 8 miles.  I'm trying to remember...........I doubt I would have had anything other than water in the bottles for at least 2 runs prior.  I am fairly certain that I would have had clean bottles for at least some of the runs I have had foaming issues.

Hmm? you have me thinking about it though.

I have also never had a problem with Gatorade.  My Infinit gets foamy.  I mix Gatorade with my CarboPro in a 28oz bottle and run with that.  That lasts me 1.5 hrs.  Anything over, I try to plan a run where I can refill with water at a water fountain or restroom.

two things I have done

1. Drive the route first and drop off a gatorade bottle every 5 miles or so with whatever you want in the bottle (I save the 20 oz bottles for this reason). I don't do this very often because it is a pain, plus I feel like I have to drive the route again after to pick up the bottles- 20 mile run then equals 40 miles driving--uggh. If I am running a loop route I will leave 2-3 bottles hidden behind a tree and just stop for a second or two each lap. This works pretty darn well.

2. Camelback. I don't love this solution either because I don't like the pack on my back but it has worked ok for me. I either use dilute gatorade or just water. Either way, I eat a gel about every 40 minutes when I am on a run lasting longer than about 90 minutes. If I don't have the gels, I will start to fall apart (bonk?) on the run at about 2 hours. Like you, I need the extra energy. I have also been experimenting a little bit with salt tabs on the run for electrolyte replacement.

I use an amphipod belt too.  I never had a problem with foam in my bottles using gatorade.  Like Bear said,  you just might want to make sure you're rinsing your bottles well while cleaning them.  I know when I put a little bit of dish soap in my bottle, it takes a lot of rinses to get ALL the foamy soap out.

For my long runs (right now about 14 miles), I carry a bottle of water and a bottle of gatordade.  I also carry a cliff shot.  I run on trail that has a couple of water stops, so I can refill the water when I run empty.

Good luck with your marathon training.  I'm training for my first one that will be in November.

That's all I got.

I thought I might be the only one that does this, good to see I'm not alone.  I don't like carrying water bottles, wearing belts, or backpacks, so this is really my only option.  I usually run 10 miles out and back, and if I want to go longer I will do the same thing again.  It limits the amount of time I have to drive in order to drop off bottles.  Only problem I have is leaving bottles on the side of the road and in the sun usually makes the liquid pretty warm if not hot.  Luckly, the weather is going to start to get cooler and I shouldn't have that problem.

I just use water and gels. I like to be able to control what goes into my body during a race and I've found that how Gatorade is mixed at races is very inconsistent. During a race I only carry gels and get water at aid stations. Plus I have doubts about the benefit a couple ounces of Gatorade provides. Seems like it would take a half bottle or more to get any real benefit and that's way too much fluid to take in at one time when running fast.

Sometimes I'll just carry some cash and stop at a 7-11 or gas station and pick up Gatorade along the way.

Never had a foam issue here either. I use a fuel belt or stuff a bottle in the back of my sports bra. I've tried leaving water/gatorade out but have had it stolen or tampered with so I don't do that anymore.

x2. Took the words right out of my mouth.

Fuel belt is my choice for long run hydration, I wonder if your belt is too big and it's bouncing around too much? I don't know though, I've never seen gatorade foam up.
