Subject: Two races, one day?

I am doing a series of 13 running races this year, and one of them is on Monday.  This upcoming race is a 10k, and is part of a Labor Day festival that also has a 5k.  One option (the one I signed up for on a whim) is to run the 10k at 8am, and the 5k at 9:30, for an extra $5.

I figure I'll have about 45 minutes between races, and my question is what do I do with myself in this time?  Walk? Jog? Rehydrate? Lounge around in the shade?  Have a beer (it is a holiday after all)?

Do NOT sit in the shade. Do NOT have a beer.

I've done some multi-stage relays, and the absolute worst thing you can do is just stop. Walking and jogging is the best. Stay loose and warm. Re-hydrate.

I'd keep walking around, with beer in hand.  Remember, theoretically beer increases oxygen intake to the blood stream!

Plus, it obviously didn't inhibit this runners performance any.

Rehydrate. Stay loose. Go for the beer if you're out to have fun! If you're out to PR, then maybe skip the beer.

Why did I never think of bringing my bike?  That might be a great idea.

Karibu - 2010-09-02 4:57 PM Bike or swim.

haha, great suggestion!  Why not use the 10k as your warm up, then go swim & bike before your 5k.

Take a few minutes to cool down after the race, stretch do a real easy mile jog or something and then get ready for the 5k!

I did the same thing this summer, but only had about 20 minutes in between races, keep moving. I had a great 10K, but had some problems in the 5k, sluggish, IT band barking at me, I was plenty fit for it, not sure why my 5k was so bad though, definitely keep moving, and rehydrate.  It's fun, and you earn your carbs and a nap for the rest of hte day!

In that amount of time you can easily bike the 10K course and, depending on the location, probably find somewhere to swim a couple hundred quick yards. You'll be able to practice your transitions too! Maybe even do the 5K in your wetsuit to save time.

Skip the wetsuit-wear a speedo the whole time.
