Total Time = 2h 24m 28s
Overall Rank = 112/1055
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 9/122
Pre-race routine:

Got at about 4:30. Had a bagel, some water, and some Diet Coke. Grabbed a bottle of Ironman Perform and drank that periodically until the race started. Got to the race just about as transition opened. Set up as usual. Met some friends, including randomly running into a fraternity brother from the very small school I went to in upstate New York 25 years ago. This is the second time that's happened at a triathlon in Austin.
Event warmup:

Jogged back to the car to stash my transition bag and then jogged back to the race. Maybe a mile total. Yoga-ish stretches after that. No swim warm up.
  • 27m 22s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards

Didn't feel like that great of a swim, but it was top 20% in the AG and top 25% overall. Should have gone a little bit easier anyway.
Transition 1
  • 03m 32s

Horrible transition. Couldn't get the damn wetsuit off my feet. Of course, the absolute worst timing chip in history was part of the cause. Who the hell provides a timing chip for a triathlon that sticks up an INCH from the athlete's leg??? Big black marks to Run Far for that. Really surprising, too, since this is hardly their first time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I didn't want to take the chance of tearing up my wetsuit on that damn chip.
  • 1h 04m 2s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 23.28 mile/hr

Woohoo. Second fastest bike split in the AG and although the run that followed wasn't great, I really don't think it was a result of going to hard on the bike. I just didn't feel like I was pushing too hard. I didn't even glance at my power numbers until I was coasting towards the dismount line.

The rain probably helped there. I know I passed people that were taking it a little easier when the rain was pouring down. I wasn't one of them. I just hammered like I normally do. I'm to dumb to worry about going down.
What would you do differently?:

Not a damn thing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s

A little slow getting the socks and running shoes on, but much better than T1.
  • 47m 55s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 43s  min/mile

Not a great run, but not bad, either.
What would you do differently?:

A 10k run hasn't been my focus the last 7 weeks.
Post race
Warm down:

Immediately signed up for the massage. Ate some food, hung out and talk to some friends and BTers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of Olympic specific training, really. With a correct distance run course, this was really a 2:27:xx effort, which is still better than my goal. I could probably knock off another 3 minutes or more if this distance was the focus of my training.

Event comments:

Biggest hit against this race were the timing chips that Run Far inexplicably decided to use. They were horrible. The were huge bulky plastic about 2"x1". What made them so much worse, though, was that they were about 1" THICK. That made getting your wetsuit on or off over it nearly impossible. I can't fathom why they used those.

I couldn't stand the race chips either! they were a huge PITA. Nice race I think I saw you on the green machine somewhere out on the bike course.
