Total Time = 1h 06m 25s
Overall Rank = 15/406
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 1/32
Pre-race routine:

Ate a peach and had some coffee. Fixed a flat on my bike after noticing a small hiss coming from my rear tire as I loaded my bike onto the back of my truck.
Event warmup:

Swung my arms around in a windmill fashion for about a minute. I seriously didn't have time to warm up. I dread waiting around for my heat so I headed over to see if I could get in the fast lane. I was lucky enough to be grouped with just 1 other swimmer.
Swim
  • 07m 22s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 28s / 100 yards
What would you do differently?:

I've avoided swimming this year to focus more on biking and running.
Transition 1
  • 02m 46s
Comments:

Transition includes long run from pool to transition area. I felt like I got in and out of transition in good time. I didn't fumble with any of my gear.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to transition onto bike with shoes already clipped in.
Bike
  • 32m 1s
  • 11.23 miles
  • 21.05 mile/hr
Comments:

I would have liked to break 30 minutes, but considering most of my riding has been on my MTB. I'm satisfied since I never got passed.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe do some time trialing to get used to riding red lined.
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

The bike dismount should have had some carpeting or something. Very slick.
What would you do differently?:

Invest in some good tri bike shoes. The ones with a single strap, then practice removing feet from shoes while on the bike.
Run
  • 23m 24s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt like I was fighting to keep good form. I think this is due to poor core conditioning. My legs felt good and so did my lungs, just my core. I also got a cramp after drinking some cold water at the turn around. I never did get passed and was able to push through the pain and run my fastest mile at the end.
What would you do differently?:

Increase core strength. Drop 20 pounds. I raced at 188-189 I think I could be a lot faster if I was in the 170's

Event comments:

I'm very happy with getting first in my age group and feel like I'm starting to improve. Especially since this was not an A race for me.

Course: The course was a hilly out and back. While coming back on Peoria just before making the left on to Compark Blvd, I was stopped by one of the volunteers so he could allow a stopped car to go through on Peoria. Not sure why the car wasn't just told to wait. There was no one behind me. That was a first time that has happened to me in a race. Not sure how much time I lost, but it was frustrating at the time.

Congratulations on the AG win Joe!  That swim was really fast!  I agree on the weight loss...dropping some pounds you will make you faster on the run.

Nice race.  Wish I would have known you yesterday, would have been fun to chat.  Very impressive time.  Wish I could use the fast lane...
