I do not understand why the Triple Brick is not in more training programs. When I was training for my IM I was all concerned and on one thread on here some guy said do the triple brick, (40k bike / 10 k run) X 3. I did it a month out from my IM. Hurt like hell, was mentally challenging, and gosh darn it if it wasn't harder than the actual ironman (and it is, it really is, at least for me it was).

Does anyone else have any other feelings on this. I hardly read about anyone doing it in training. But as a litmus test to see if you got what it takes to make it through the IM I think it is pretty much the bomb.

Now, that being said, I never did any standard longer bricks, so maybe that is why.

So 18.6 miles of running, and 120k on the bike...all at once?  Over 6 hours for most.  Seems excessive to me for any distance Ironman or under.  Double/Triple Ironman, maybe.

2 cents.

Took me 8 hours plus 45 min transition time. I still feel a wave of nausea when I look at that entry in my log book.

People routinely train up to 180k or more than 7 hours on the bike in prep for an IM so I don't get how the time commitment could be too much.

I agree it is a bit to much..why run over 18 miles plus ride that much all in one day?

The idea generally that I hear is max long run is 2.5 hours for an IM. For me 18 miles would be well over 2.5 hours. Recovery from a triple brick would put a big dent into IM training. Potential injury with doing all that running after riding would be a concern as well.

I was advised to do it 1 month out and at the beginning of my taper. I did it 2 weeks out. I also did it with very little running background as my training was very bike intensive with running being severely negligent. There was some walking in that running.

Okay, so that is 2 this is silly votes. Gosh.

Quite possibly my favorite workout...ever!

I've only done it in preparation for a HIM so the distances were adjusted and pacing was set paced on bike wattage and run pace...1st set slightly below race effort, 2nd set at race effort, 3rd set slightly above race effort.

This workout was fantastic in regards to mental toughness, patience and pacing. I was shot by the end of the workout but I feel like it did wonders for me and opened my eyes to appropriate race pace.

For the IM athletes my coach works with he typically sets them up with 3x(30mi ride/6mi run) at the same pacing as above.

FWIW I did mine about 2 weeks ago, my race is this Sunday.

Finally a vote for the good guys. That workout sounds like more of a workout for someone who is in serious training mode. To throw down negative splits like that seems inhuman to me.

The way I did the workout was pure survival mode, start out easy and then slow down.
