Pre-race routine:

I did the Aqua Velo... can't seem to find that race link so guess I'll post this under the full.

Scheduled to get up at 4:30a but woke a little before 4 and waited for the alarm. I stayed at the Hyatt but probably won't again. It was a nice place and convenient but pricey. Drove to the HS then took the bus to the swim start. Had plenty of time for set-up, etc. There were about 8 portojohns at the swim start and long lines just before the start.
Event warmup:

None.
Swim
  • 1h 11m 47s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 42s / 100 yards
Comments:

Lined up on the far right. Stayed to the inside and had to come back a few times to make sure I passed the bouy on the left side. Sun glare at times but not too bad. More chop than I expected.
What would you do differently?:

Navigate to the bouys better.
Transition 1
  • 04m 50s
Comments:

Changed into the tri shorts in the tent. Wasn't too worried about time on this one. Used the portojohn right outside tranistion just to pee and so I would be more comfortable on the bike.
Bike
  • 6h 46m 27s
  • 112 miles
  • 16.53 mile/hr
Comments:

Paced the event like I was planning on running a marathon right after. Took about 30 minutes to settle in z2 then was able to stay there most of the time. Sometimes moving to z3 with headwinds which seemed to be more common than tailwinds. Nutrition was good and only minor stomach issues. The special needs stop at the high school was great to get cold fluids and use the rest room. I had a special needs bag but didn't use it. I also took one stop about mile 90 to reload fluids. Temperatures were higher than normal for that time of year but not as bad as expected (at least for the bike).
What would you do differently?:

Stops for special needs and potty breaks take more time than I thought..compared to rolling through just grabing water.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 00m
  • 26.2 miles

Post race
Warm down:

Only did a short 10 minute run as frankly I didn't know where to run to, and it was hot. So I shut it down and went to shower at the high school. The finish area seemed quiet but it was a small event. In the end, it was a good training day to increase confidence for the IM.

Event comments:

A well organized event. Small but all the bases were covered.
