Towne Lake Community, Texas
United States
Total Time = 2h 10m 43s
Overall Rank = 5/1100
Age Group = Invitational
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Nothing new
Event warmup:

~1mi jog w/pickups & ~300m swim to loosen up the shoulders
Swim
  • 21m 25s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was a really cool swim course, I enjoyed the 2 loops. I swam this slightly different than I normally would, took it out strong to try and beat the 3rd wave start (10' back). Was really neat exiting the water and having everyone cheering as I ran to the 2nd loop. The 3rd wave started right before I dove in for the 2nd loop so I shut it down and just cruised the 1st 1/2 of the 2nd loop to navigate around people. Rounded the buoy to head back into shore and picked it up again. Volunteer tried to get me to do a 3rd loop, I just kept running and he eventually figured it out :)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 02m 55s
Comments:

Long run (~1/4mi) from the swim exit to the bike. Nearly the entire run was on carpet/sand so bare feet were fine. Got passed during the run to transition, damn runners.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 1h 03m 21s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 23.54 mile/hr
Comments:

Passed the runner in transition so I got the lead vehicle for a little bit on the bike. Once I was on the main road had a nice tailwind on the way out, turned into a cross wind and my speed dropped way down. Something didn't feel right, my power was holding around normal but I was ~23mph instead of my normal ~25mph. I wasn't sure if it was the wind, dead legs or just in my head. Found out after the race my rear brake was rubbing but only when I put weight on the wheel :(

I was pretty frustrated most of the ride since I wasn't hitting speed and didn't know what the heck was going on. Grant passed me only ~5mi into the ride and he was flying, Ryan passed me ~15mi in and I kept trading places with Matt. Came into transition in 3rd place with Matt/Trent not far behind. Avg power, 296W
What would you do differently?:

Going to start riding my bike once I arrive at the race. The brake wasn't rubbing the day before, something must have shifted during the drive to the race.
Transition 2
  • 00m 39s
Comments:

Nothing special, rack bike, grab hat/Garmin, run...
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 42m 30s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

Started off the run strong, right where I wanted to be ~6:30/mi. After the 2nd mile my pace just kept slowing down and I could see 2 guys catching me. I'd push a little harder which would last for a bit then fade again. Legs just didn't have it in them today, not sure why but it happens to me sometimes. Got passed by Trent/Matt in the football stadium with 1mi to go.

I tried to make one last surge of effort after the last water station but it wasn't in the cards.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster
Post race
Warm down:

Rehydrated and talked w/friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Brake issue on the bike and couldn't get the legs moving.

Event comments:

Very well put on event with a lot of unique challenges throughout the course. It's nice to have some variety in the events, seems a lot of people just want flat/fast/PR courses but I prefer the uniqueness of an event. I wasn't a huge fan of the long transition run but that's cause I suck at running. Aaron did the best he could with the situation and I hope the 2-loop swim course stays around for next year!

Personally I'm slightly frustrated with my race, I gave it everything I had that day but it sucks when you know there's more to give... I'm glad to figure out the bike issue now rather than Clearwater and am looking forward to a few more weeks of hard training before taper!

Sorry about the brake grab Eric.  It was great seeing you out there and I actually got to see you on the swim for a change (I was one of the maniacs screaming at you) before your second loop.  We should all be so lucky to be disappointed with 5th OA.  Great race!
