I'm doing my first half marathon (other than the pathetic one I did in Oliver last June).  Anyone else running this weekend?

Yup!!! Sure am ... it's a great course. It'll be my 5th Royal Vic ('scuse me, GoodLife Fitness), 7th Half and first major run since injury/surgery. I'll be wearing a tiara on top of my running hat ... I'm going to run as the Comeback Queen hehe ... Couple other BT'ers coming over from the mainland too ... what's your goal for this run?

Doing the Okanagen Half. Hopefully it's a little warmer than the -10 degrees we got to start in last year.
Happy running!!

It will be my first "official" half too... Last few long runs before the taper were overcast and drizzly... and it rained steady for my last tri this season (Vancouver)... Grew up in southern Ontario and spent 9 years in Victoria.. I can run in just about anything!!

Hope everyone has a great time this weekend... !!

I've been struggling through injuries so it's hard to peg down a goal. Ideally, I would have tried for 2:00-2:15, but realistically, it could be anywhere from 2:15-2:45.

I never get to run in the rain, although I enjoy doing so, so I have no idea how I will fair (fare?) if it pours the entire time.

Yes, Fare. (Can't help it, I'm an Editor in real life.)

Believe me, I know all about struggling with injuries. Last year I had a 2:10 goal and was coming in at about 1:54 when my knee went and I had to walk the last two km. Sigh. To add insult to injury, kindly meaning people kept patting me on the shoulder, and saying helpful things like, "You're almost there!" Then of course this year was the Horrible Hamstring Happening, in which my hamstring ripped off the bone ... BUT instead of a six month recovery, I'm doing the Half ... just over 3 months since surgery. So I'm not complaining, even if I come in around 3:00:00!! I'm (not-so-secretly) hoping for about 2:30 but I've had this darned cold for so long it's impacted my training. Ach well .... I'm sure to get a lovely 10-10-10 Jacket anyway.

Puddle Duck, darling girl, where did you live in Ontario? I hail from those parts (looooong ago now).

AND you know what? No matter what time we come in at ... WE DID IT. So there.

PS I love running in the rain ... better than the blazing sun ... just have good gear. My first Half was in the rain; I had NO rain gear but fortunately I'd purchased a technical long-sleeve shirt at the Expo. I'd never actually owned technical gear and it was a complete revelation! Now I say: it's all about the gear!!!

TOTALLY agree. I cannot call it anything but the Royal Vic. Sigh.

Cee Cee & Kelownagurl...

Sounds like we've got the same approximate time goals for the 1/2... best case scenario... I'd like to go sub 2:15, but will be happy with sub 2:30... worst case scenario I'll be happy just to finish!!

Are either of you running with a pacing/running partner?! If not, we can try to meet up at the start.. and see if we are on pace with one another?!

CeeCee.. Kitchener, Ontario is my hometown You?

Good heavens, I "grew up" (as much as I admit any of that) in Toronto. I don't have a running/pacing partner but will start slowly in any event ... I need to do a very slow 5 km before starting to add speed. Having said that, I'm going to meet up with some friends on the steps of the Legislature at about 7:17 Sunday morning ... I'm seeing my student, Yeontae, off, in the 8km. They leave at 7:15 so once they've gone I'll hie myself over to the Leg.

PD ... I moved a lot. I was born in Illinois, and lived in Connecticut, England and Michigan before moving to Toronto ... lingered there for about 16 years then headed West! It's this time of the year I miss the Kitchener Market ... Elmira ... Chudleigh's ... sigh ... OHHHH and the Old Hyde House ...  (clearly NOT a vegetarian lol).

Puddle Duck and Ceecee  - my race number is 6292 and my bib will actually say "Kelownagurl" on it so be sure to say hi if you see me amongst the other 6800 runners.   I'd say yeah, let's try to meet up but I don't really know exactly where we even go at this point.  My hubby is doing the 8k so I'm kind of hoping to see him off at 7:15 then rush back the 2 blocks for our start, but I don't know if that's realistic.

Just talked to my coach and he wants me to try to stick to a 6:45 min/km for the first 15km or so and see how it goes and then pick it up at the end if I can. That would give me a 2:20 or better if I could hold it.  I have no clue.  I also don't really know what the course is like. Some people say hilly and others say the hills are nothing.

If you think up a good way for us to connect, let me know!

Email is [email protected]  (gurl with a u)

Either way - good luck at your race!

6:45 that's my kind of pace. Yes, that'll get you 2:20ish with a pick-up later in your game. I may stay at that pace or pick it up a bit. The longest distance I've done is 15.5 only ... dratted sinusitis slowed me down ... My friend Claudia is doing it too, and that'll be her kind of pace. Would be grand if we could meet up.

You can absolutely see him off for the 8KM and then you'll have LOTS of time to get to the start line. Tell you what: stand RIGHT under the right-hand (as you're looking towards the start line) "2:30:00" pace sign ... I'll find you!!!! I don't consider it hilly, but you are always going up or going down. It's more of the "long gradual incline" kind of thing ... there are a couple "hills" but if you've been used to running hills you'll be fine. It's actually uphill around Beacon Hill Park (hence, I suppose, the name HILL) though you can't really tell by looking at it ... then a nice long downhill to the 10KM mark, and then gradual uphill to the turnaround ... which becomes a gradual downhill to Clover Point (where the 10KM mark was) and then a bit of an uphill there... you might notice that one ... then once you're past the park on the left it's pretty much downhill or flat all the way in, with the exception of one very cruel and short hill at about the 1-mile-to-go mark.

Looking forward to it! Look for the gal with a tiara on her hat ... that'll be me ... the Comeback Queen ...

I'm going for a 2:30 pace and are there pace bunnies in this run?  If they are I am heading for the 2:30 pace group too.

I don't think there are pace bunnies ... at least, they haven't had them in previous years. But now that it's the GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon, anything is possible. They do have "self-seeding" signs by time, and usually there are some groups there that are led by someone who is bringing them in at that time. You can kinda cruise along with them. Check out the gal with the tiara, that's me ... hehe ... I'll be under the right-hand 2:30 sign at about 7:20 ... See you all there, I hope! #6567 Connie aka CeeCee

There were pace bunnies when Leah and I did the royal vic half in 2008. As for the course, the hills really aren't too bad.. more long and gradual than short and steep. A relatively flat course, compared to others I've seen.

I'm doing the 8k this year. Good luck everyone!

Thanks so much for the positive thoughts & congrats on completion of the event!!

Still working on an official "race report".. but definitely have a few thoughts at this point... (extracted from various emails, letters and race comments.... )...

"What an awesome first 1/2 marathon experience!!"

PRE-RACE REFLECTIONS
Despite what many thought.. this was my first official (timed) 1/2 marathon!! Apparently, my triathlon training and approach to training for running events seemed to lead people to believe I have much greater experience in this field?!

REFLECTIONS ON THE START

Early-ish start (7:30am) and gray weather..having lived in Victoria for 9 years (2001-2009).. I felt right at home! Stayed downtown at the Backpackers Inn.. which proved both cost effective & convenient for our overall weekend plan!

REFLECTIONS TOWARD the END

My finish line approach wasn't particularly entertaining... by about 200m out... I was pretty much focused on the fact I'd managed to maintain a decent 5:50+/- ish pace... and that I'd likely come in sub 2:05.

Elsewhere in the mind.. were the reasons I run.. these reasons give both strength & purpose to training and competition!! In another corner of my mind.. the fact that Ray and the rest of the marathon crowd had just started their race.

It wasn't until I was about 150m (or less from finish) that I realized I had an audience... 2 of my best gals and their hubbies!!

Reviewing my comments.. it's almost a "race report"... i think?!?!
