Total Time = 6h 34m 32s
Overall Rank = 1480/2150
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 57/100
Pre-race routine:

Ate a bagel with peanut butter and a banana.
Event warmup:

Got wetsuit one and waited. Timing of everything worked out perfectly. Not alot of standing around time.
Swim
  • 44m 3s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was brutal, especially at the start. I got majorly beat up! Did a MUCH better job at sighting and staying on course than I usually do. I literally touched 4 buoys and ran straight into one!
What would you do differently?:

Practice with the wetsuit more and do more open water swims. I held back a little too as this was my first HIM, so wanted to make sure I didn't overdo.
Transition 1
  • 05m 48s
Comments:

Was better than I expected, so was happy with that. My rack was close to the bike exit, so that was nice. Usually I get screwed here lol
What would you do differently?:

Bike
  • 3h 20m 32s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.77 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a fantastic bike - really gave it all I could but my hamstring/piriformis issue had other ideas. It was killing about halfway through the bike. Could not stand going up hills on it.

Did well with nutrition and scored lots of extra GU packets along the way.
What would you do differently?:

Go in uninjured! Felt I could have gave more effort, but again, was conserving to make sure I could finish the run.
Transition 2
  • 03m 17s
Comments:

This was a much better transition than I expected, so I can't complain.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to take my bike gloves off in transition - I got to carry them around the entire run!
Run
  • 2h 37m 39s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

My hamstring and entire right leg were DONE by this point. Running up any kind of hill was not an option, so I did LOTS of walking. Walked through every water station and got sponges, water, coke, and again scored lots of extra gu packs :)
What would you do differently?:

Go in uninjured! Check out the course beforehand. I was not prepared for it at all. They told us there were some "off-road portions", but it didn't register to me how much of that they meant.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around the finish line a bit, got some food and more water. Watched other finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My right leg injury.

Event comments:

Again, I'm not a fan of the off-road stuff. It's brutal. Good race, but not sure I'd do it again unless they took it all out on the pavement. My goal was 7 hours, so I'm happy with 6:34. But, I know I can do better if I'm not injured. The heat sucked, but I dealt with it. Next time, I will break 6:30 if not 6:15! I know where there is room for improvement.
