I did the GR Mary this weekend.  I was shooting for a 3:35, with a 3:45 being "acceptable".  I did not even come close and finished at just under 4:05, 17 min off of my PR.  I told my family that I should be finishing around 11:35am.  When I finally made it to the end, my 9 yr-old daughter and 6 yr-old son grabbed each hand and ran the final 100m with me.

The first thing my san said was "How come you're so late?"

The fact that I just ran 26.2 was lost on him, he just wondered why I was so slow.

My daughter always has something to say - so now I just don't take her anymore

First mini-tri - waiting in my wetsuit for them to announce my wave:
D: Mama how come everyone else has a little black bracelet on their ankle except for you?

In the car on the way to second mini-tri:
Mama: My stomach is in knots and I feel like I'm going to throw up.
D: You could just not do it Mum.  But then you'd be a quitter!

Second mini-tri pre-swim - Daughter cups my face between her hands and looks deeply:
D: I was hoping I'd find an eyelash so I could make a wish for you because I think you are gonna need it.

Returning bike portion of first sprint - daughter yells from a big crowd:
D: Hurry Mom - you are REALLY behind!!
To which she received a loud applause!

There are many more... I should have wrote them all down.  But these are the ones that stand out the most.  Fun stuff!

On Sunday, a friend completed his first HIM.  Yesterday, my wife asked his seven year old daughter "aren't you proud of your dad?"  Her reply:  "he didn't win."

After my first sprint, my kids were there cheering me on, but both were too young to grasp the accomplishment.  I gather my husband had been promising lunch as soon as Mommy finished because my daughter simply said "Mommy's here, can we have lunch now?"  (She's 3)  On the other hand, my 10 year old nephew met me with about 500 metres to go in the run and ran back with me all the while cheering "You're the best Auntie Frankie" and "I'm so proud of you!"  Now there's a kid who knows how to inspire someone!!!  He's training for Kids of Steel for next year - great kid!

She would have been 5 for the first three quotes - 6 for the last one.

This year she was looking over my shoulder while I looked at the race pics from my oly - she told me it was a 'wise choice for you to wear the black top... because it kind of hides everything" !!  7years old

When my wife told her 11 year old daughter  that I finished in the top 10 for my age group at my last race she asked, "How many in his age group?" Thankfully there were a few more than 10. I got her back though. A few weekends ago she went to a soccer tournament with her father. When she got home she proudly announced her team came in second in their bracket. I asked, "How many teams in your bracket?"

After my HIM in Sept I collapsed outside the finishing chute where I was in a sprint finish the last 150 yards or so.  Completely spent my 3.5 year old son runs up to me and says, "Daddy, can we go home now?" Not what I was hoping he'd say, but it was a long day for a 3.5 year old!

not tri related but when my daughter was 4, I asked her why she had so much troubling doing what she's told to do, her response: "Daddy, I'm a kid, sometimes I'm just not going to listen."

promises of food? Are you kidding me, the ONLY reason my kids come to my races is for the food!

I will say they are getting better-i hope this doesn't sound cocky- at least now, they want to know how I placed and always ask for clarification between all the girls or just my age group.

It the mornings, which is when I do my workouts, if I AM home, I get confused looks and questioned about why I am home and why I didn't go workout.

50 feet from the finish line of my first (and only to date) sprint this past September, my 8 yr old son ran out to meet me and then ran the last little bit with me yelling at me to go faster and that even he could beat me!!!

My friend asked my 5 year old if he thought I would win my race and he said, "No, she'll probably be in 200th place." Not too far from the truth

Earlier this summer my 8 year old son was in a swim meet and due to low numbers, swam his race against several girls.  The girl that won that event, happens to be a family friend and a teammate of my son, so needless to say, there was some "you lost to a girl" comments made.  My son handled it surprisingly well and never said anything, UNTIL... I had just finished my 4th tri of the season and one of the female competitors, a former student of mine, beat me by less than a minute.  After checking the results, my son says, "I'm not the only one who lost to a girl."

These are all so great.  I did my first sprint triathlon last spring.  My sister who had done many triathlons before (and is very good) wanted to do it with me.  During the bike portion, I passed my husband and kids who were cheering me on.  My 4y/o yelled out, "Yeah Mom.  Finally.  Aunt Anna came by hear a looooong time ago."   LOL.  Gotta love kids.
