Katy, Texas
United States
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 36m 18s
Overall Rank = 274/493
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 40/64
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:45. Clif Bar, half a Coke, drive to parking area for race site. Check tires on bike, grab transition stuff.
Event warmup:

Walk about a 1/2-mile to race site.
Swim
  • 11m 31s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

The subdivision lake looked very similar to the lake where I practice OWS, so I just visualized the swim course as my practice course. Lots of swimmers in my wave. Had my feet hit more than usual, but also got to draft some. Love swimming in the wetsuit. Found myself actually racing a few times, then tried to pull back and maintain. Feels good to get out of the water w/my wave instead of w/the wave behind me!
What would you do differently?:

Be faster.
Transition 1
  • 02m 20s
Comments:

Wetsuit strippers rock. That was fast! I sat down to put socks/shoes on, but still got out faster than my 1st T1. Perfect mount.
What would you do differently?:

Move faster.
Bike
  • 51m 47s
  • 16 miles
  • 18.54 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt really good out there, but had to save something for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Need to train harder so I can ride faster and still have something left.
Transition 2
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

Perfect dismount, jogged to rack, helmet off, changed shoes. Grab race belt, take off.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe move a little faster.
Run
  • 29m 7s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Calves were tight as soon as I hit the course. Eased up, kept HR close to 160, and weighted for calves to loosen up. Couldn't run as fast as I wanted w/out them getting tighter. Couldn't judge miles or halfway mark since turnaround was not at halfway. It's on me: I should have studied the course better so I would know when to turn it on.
What would you do differently?:

Know the course better. Stretch calves at end of bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Pizza, beer, hang out w/family, talk w/other racers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to increase biking and running miles in training.

Event comments:

Very well run. Bike course a little tight, but overall good.

I had the same problem on the run with judging distance. I guess its up to us to know, but in a total of 4 tris and at least a dozen running races, this is the first race I've ever done with NO type of mile markers.

I believe they had the water stations at the mile markers.

Thanks y'all.

uhcoog: I would say I'll be faster in the Spring, but I know you will be too. See you then.
