Event warmup:

Ran 10 minutes slow, then did about 5 strides building to race pace and maintaining for 1 telephone pole. Then jogged for a few more minutes.

Comments:

This was just a neighborhood run I put together. The course was mostly an out and back. First mile had one steep down hill and a very gradual decline, then pretty flat for the next mile, and mile three back up the gradual incline and the steep hill.

I started faster than I had planned and ran the first mile in 6:45. I slowed it down and tried to hold a 7:30 pace, but the second mile came in at 7:38, third was 8:19 and I was fading fast.
What would you do differently?:

Pace better at the start. the 5k distance is still a mystery to me. I think I treat it like a short race, and it's really not. 20 minutes is too long to sprint.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I had very limited running the 6 weeks prior to this race. I was on a post-HIM recovery period, so this time was actually fine with me.

It's still a great job on the run...although, I would like to know the standard measurement for "1 telephone pole"...Great job - and now you've got your course that you can compare with over time.
