Pre-race routine:

Got up about 5:15 am; got dressed and went down to the lobby to meet my friend, training partner & fellow competitor, Tracy. Got body marked; dropped off special needs bags and then back up to the hotel to eat breakfast and put on the swim gear. Breakfast at about 6:10 am ~ plain instant oatmeal and a large banana.
Event warmup:

No warm up; Tracy and I just walked down to the beach and froze our a**es off!! Cool to see all the people on the beach & really cool helicopter flying around.

I saw a shark!! It was on the first loop, i had moved out a little to get my stroke going. We got out into deeper water, i looked down and there it was! It freaked me out, but i just tried to stay calm. I swam right back into the pack and had never been so happy to be swimming with that many people!! Boy, did that skitz me out for a minute ~ but what a cool story to tell now!!
What would you do differently?:

Apply more glide to the back of my neck by my hairline. I am chaffed sooo bad in that area. I think the buoyancy made my head a little higher than normal.
Transition 1
  • 12m 40s

Wonderful volunteer in T1, very helpful getting me dressed quickly and out of there.
What would you do differently?:

Awesome bike split! Much, much colder than expected, but the sun was bright and shiny all day. I felt comfortable and stayed in aero most of the time (except the last 5 or so miles ~ crosswinds were too much between all the buildings). Good nutrition, stuck with what I had trained with all year ~ mainly EFS & Honey Stingers.

Transition 2

Felt so fabulous in T2! So glad to be done with the bike (i enjoyed it, but was ready to put my feet back on the Helped the girl next to me, just sat and chilled for a minute. I was ahead of my plan and felt awesome!!
What would you do differently?:

Not a damn thing:)

I felt really good for the first loop, continually slowed down, but felt really good. I managed to run for the first 16 miles. Then, i just had to start walking. I knew i was going to be an Ironman today, so nothing could burst my bubble; i would "run" as much as I could and then take some walk breaks in between. I had some GI trouble and could not stomach solid foods past about mile 14 or so. I finally tried the chicken broth at about mile 17 or 18. Amazing!! That stuff totally rocks! So, from that point on I had a cup of chicken broth and a cup of coke at every aid station ~ Yum!
What would you do differently?:

Start taking chicken broth earlier!!

Post race
Warm down:

Celebrated with my family! Went to hotel, showered and then came back down to watch my friend, Tracy finish ~ Awesome!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I've been battling plantar fasciitis since July. I did not get the run training in that I would have liked. I knew that I would have some trouble on the run course; however, I was SO happy with my swim & bike performance and knew that I had PLENTY of time, that it just did not seem to matter. "Stacie ARE an IRONMAN" will gladly replace the slight dissapointment I had because of my run performance:)

Event comments:

What a wonderful experience!! The volunteers are FABULOUS!! I just had an amazing day. I'm so happy to have completed something that I have worked so hard for.
