I was wondering if anyone could give me any input or knowledge on the following. I did IMFL in '07 and '08, times of 11:54 and 11:13. This past Sept. I was diagnosed with kidney cancer. I then had my right kidney removed and all was contained within my kidney. I have now signed up for IMFL '11. I am supposed to be on a diet of <2000 mg of sodium and < 8g of protein per day. I know there are people with 1 kidney who have done this. I was wondering if anyone knew personal stories or had info of how to maintain this diet and how to prepare, train, and race. Thanks in advance for any help. Tim Walker

So sorry to hear of your cancer but glad you are doing well.  I have done IMFL 4 times and I only have one kidney.  I was born that way apparently but never knew until 2000.  Aside from being told not to eat lots of leafy green veggies and watch my calcium intake (I had a kidney stone)  I was never told to watch my sodium intake but I don't like it anyway.  They probably told you that so you don't get hypertension (high blood pressure) Less than 8 grams protien a day seems expectionally LOW.  Certainly you do not want to be on a high protien diet.  I;d talk with a sports nutritionist.  Also RE the sodium I think replacing your losses is different from your daily sodium intake.  You may want to find out how much sodium is in your sweat so you can more accurately replace it.

I have both my kidneys but I can comment on the diet.  The best way to keep it low-sodium is to eat at home and buy fresh food.  If you cut out most of your processed foods and stop eating out, I think you'll find yourself below the limit with minimal effort.  Not eating out saves money too... more to spend on your bike

I'd definitely consult with your regular doctor + a sports nutrition specialist for specific advice on doing an Ironman though.

had a kidney transplant in 2001 and did imaz in 2007 , what exactly do you want to know?

i think your remaining kidney will take up the workload of the other kidney , do you have hypertension problems? you can pm me if you want.

A friend of mine did IMAZ yesterday after a kidney transplant in December 2004.

He's a great guy and would probably be more than willing to spend some time talking to you.
