I know a couple of us (Trout, Quincyf, and I'm sure a few I'm forgetting) set goals specifically for this month. Mine was a swim goal to get 12,000 in and I'm at 9,900 with one more workout thursday I'll come just short of it but its been a great month for my swimming so I can't complain! |

I did not use it for my first two tris (had it set wrong for the first and did not want to waste time messing with it, and forgot it for the second). Since this is a longer race, part of me thinks I should use it so I can somewhat pace myself (I have zero sense of pace without it) and the other part says to go without. Yes and no...I use a Garmin in a race to make sure I am not going too slow or going out too fast in the run. I also don't plan on racing with a heart rate monitor. If you are trying to "just get through it" then go ahead and where it, if you are racing then focus on the competition ahead and behind you, but stay realistic of what you can do, don't take out running sub 5 min miles. on the bike I leave my garmin flipped on my risk so I can see it on the bike, and on the run I'll leave it in that position so I don't look at it too much and so I can actually "race it" but staying realistic of my upper limits.
Do you have zone guidelines for different distance races??? I am still a bit fuzzy on this.
Yes there are zone guidelines, like zone 1, zone 2, zone 3a, zone 3b, zone4a, zone 4b, zone 5. you need a lacate threshold test to determine these zones. |

Tyler, | Subject: RE: Tri Ritter's Mentor Program "Smashin' it 2011" CLOSED DaveL - 2011-03-27 11:34 AM happy today. Ran 5km this morning after a successful, careful 15 minute run last night. No shin pain during or after either run so I am going to resume my regular training schedule. I will be reducing run volumes during the ramp up and need to remain pain and injury free leading up to my first 1/2 marathon on May1. Jumped on the bike after the run this morning and hammered out 20km. I also checked my pool schedule and plan to hit the pool later this afternoon for a quick (well quick for me!) 750m. Although not a perfect race sim it gives me a base line to work with. I do plan to do a better race sim in 2 weeks at the wrap up of my plan. easy does it, stick to soft flat surfaces for now. |

Tyler, | Subject: RE: Tri Ritter's Mentor Program "Smashin' it 2011" CLOSED adubtri - 2011-03-28 6:32 AM I did a 50/10 brick this weekend and hit a wall on the run. I felt good getting off the bike but after about 1.5 miles, my legs just wanted to stop. Mentally I felt great. Is this the head games people talk about? I tried to keep running through the fatigue but that would only last for about 3-5 mins and I'd have to stop. I feel it was an energy level problem which leads back to the nutrition. I ate about 4500 cals the day before and had a good 1000 cals breakfast. Are there any good recommendations to help correct this problem? Thanks!! ' yes, don't run that far off the bike !!! You were trashed, better to do a long run the day before or after and just a short run at race pace after your bike. |

Tyler, | Subject: RE: Tri Ritter's Mentor Program "Smashin' it 2011" CLOSED Sorry guys, I have been out of touch on here lately. Been very busy!! I wrecked my bike a couple of weeks ago hitting a deer, then 2 days later wrecked my car (my fault), sprained my ankle over the weekend, and now for some reason my right hand is hurting and I can't explain why. Roll call, who is going to the Kemah triathlon this weekend? I believe there is a few of you. I'll be down there Friday evening and staying till sometime after the olympic on Sunday. I got a big group I am staying w/ including pro triathlete Andrew Yoder. Good luck everyone!!! |

Veteran 1900 Southampton, Ontario | Subject: RE: Tri Ritter's Mentor Program "Smashin' it 2011" CLOSED for swimming I am at 13850m and will probably add another 2000m tonight. I also got in a really tough 7km run this morning and got the bike outside on the road. I had to lean into the wind at some points and it was a really crappy ride BUT it was OUTSIDE! so Im calling it a good ride. |

Veteran 1900 Southampton, Ontario | Subject: RE: Tri Ritter's Mentor Program "Smashin' it 2011" CLOSED got my 100 lengths in tonight so that brings me up to 16350. I wanted to do the 20,000m but I had my doubts because of the time I had so I made that the stretch goal with a real goal of 15,000. On the bike side I have 685km in the bank with one more day in the month. I have the afternoon off tomorrow but checked the weather and its supposed to snow. Back to the trainer I go but I will bring that total up to 750km for sure. |

Veteran 204 | Subject: RE: Tri Ritter's Mentor Program "Smashin' it 2011" CLOSED Hey gang - I have been MIA for a bit now. Things have been a little crazy for Tif and I lately. Stress all around us. Our youngest Boston Terrier has been very sick and has required long trips to Texas A&M Univeristy to see the best vets in the country (just my opinion). This has required some rearranging of the training schedule, but we have managed to get all of the workouts in. It has also been stressful because we have to make sure there is someone at the house with her all the time because she can not be alone right now...so when we have workouts in the afternoon we have to arrange for a puppy sitter...once again somehow we have made this work. Then work is crazy because of all the cuts in funding for Texas Education and that means job security goes out the window...who ever thought that you would not have job security with being a teacher. Anyways, the good news is Taylor (Boston Terrier) is now on medicine and I am hopeful this is going to help her and we can get back to some type of normalcy in our household. All that being said...Tif and I are a week and three days away from the HIM. I am starting to get very excited and I am very greatful for the taper. I have some lofty goals for my "if everything goes right" race...that would be to finish in 5 1/2 hrs...that is more than an hour better than last years time....but I think I have it in me if things fall into place...then if I don't have the "perfect" race I would at least like to be sub-6 hrs. Sorry for the novel....hope everyones' training is solid...and good luck to all racing this week! |

Master 1468 Montgomery, Tx | Subject: RE: Tri Ritter's Mentor Program "Smashin' it 2011" CLOSED I did better than I thought I would. My swim was where I thought it would be, a whopping 29:34. My bike was pretty solid. The T1 and bike time is together and it was a 1:06:55. I figure I avg close to 23mph on the bike. I ran a 42:12 for the 10K which is pretty solid for me. I have been training the run pretty hard so I was glad to push on the bike and come back and have this run. I thought I could have been close to 40, but I could not keep pace over the Kemah bridge. I ended up 3rd in the 35-39 AG missing a spot to Alcatraz by :10. I can not afford to go, but it sure would have been nice to think I could. Now, I need to SBR more for IMTX coming in may. Also I want to lose 10 pounds for IMTX(I know I am getting too close to be cutting calories with the volumn I will be adding). I still think 206 is a little heavy for the goals I have for myself. |

Member 178 Dallas, TX | Subject: RE: Tri Ritter's Mentor Program "Smashin' it 2011" CLOSED Congrats! Glad you had a good race. Mine sucked. A lot! I totally overfaced myself. My body is not happy. I ate half a protein bar for breakfast and was unable to chock anything else down. Just the thought of food gagged me. I managed to drink some (not enough) water. The drink back to Dallas was miserable. My back seized up, so I was pretty uncomfortable driving. I also pull over 3 time to puke up what little water I managed to drink. Not much better since I've been home. |

Tyler, | Subject: RE: Tri Ritter's Mentor Program "Smashin' it 2011" CLOSED Congrat Patrick you are getting pretty darn fast!!! Teddy sorry to hear about your stomach issues, I hope get things worked out. I had a bagel w/ peanut butter at 4am, but the long wait made me hungry again before the start. I also think I over ate the past few days as I had pretty bad stomach cramps on the run and my shoes were digging into my heel on every turn, it hurt so bad. Anyways, I'll be wearing socks in Galveston so hopefully it won't be too bad this weekend. I should have been under 2:02 or so on that course, instead went 2:10. Oh well, try again this week. |

Expert 1358 Albuquerque, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Tri Ritter's Mentor Program "Smashin' it 2011" CLOSED Hi everyone, sorry I've been MIA...my internet was not working well for a while and it was all I could do to keep my logs up to date. I finally called ATT support (which I was dreading) and she got everything back up and running in about 20 seconds... To everyone who did Kemah, did you do race reports yet??? Nothing out of the ordinary to report here...training is going well, no injuries, feeling the increases, but handling them so far (it's early yet). AFA our little challenge, I didn't hit my goal of 4 strength training sessions every week, but the challenge did make me do more than I would have on my own! So it was a semi success for me, I guess! What's everyone doing today? OFF day for me, but I think we're going to the pool to goof around and work on strokes. My plan is to take some video. If I do, I'll post it here for some laughs. |
