Can someone tell me how riding on my trainer translates to real outside riding? I usually go about 30 minutes for 6.5 to 7 miles. That's an average of 13/14 mph. I was wondering if I should be concerned that my target speed of 16 mph for race day seems hard for me to attain at this time.

By no means is this a scientific study but I find that I average almost 2 mph slower on the trainer then I do outdoors.  Making it even worse is that I may go outdoors for 50-60 miles and average 2mph more then I do on the trainer for a 1 hour ride.

If that's so, I should be able to hit my 16 mph goal once I get outside. Hopefully the weather will break soon and I'll find out.

mikoy - 2011-02-28 10:38 AM Well, I had a hard weekend. I went 5 hours on the bike on Sat.  The weather was bad with winds gusting to about 50-60mph, so I did it all on the trainer. I am guessing that based on my average ride that I would have gone about 85 miles. I have to say that my legs were really sore and painful.
I am now extremely scared for IMSG. I just do not know how Im going to do 6-7 hours on a bike and then run a marathon. This is the first time I have wanted to quit.
Any advice on how to stay motivated, or how to metally get through this we be most welcomed.

Well I was in Vegas over the weekend and can attest to how windy it was.  The thing with Ironman training is that you are going to have bad days.  The training is a long grind and they're bound to pop up.  Just stick with the plan and keep heading out there and I guarantee that you will have good days too.  By the time race days rolls around, trust in plan, trust in your training and let the adrenaline carry you through the day.  You'll be amazed on race day what your body can attain

I think most people are generally faster on the road than on the trainer, although this can vary on the type of trainer, tension, etc.  For now, I say don't fret over speed until you get outdoors and get an approximate feel for how you are doing

Well, the race went well! I was in the 3rd heat, and I finished with a time of 40:04, for the race.  I was the first one out of the pool in my group, finishing 100 yards ahead of the next person. My time was 7:45 for the 500, I was a little concerned about the pace, but in the end it worked out okay.  Transition was slow, but I definitely will improve my time in the future, I just was so excited it was slightly slower than normal.  Bike went well, finished in 16:25. Run went okay too, did well pacing myself. I got passed by one guy in my heat, and he finished 25 seconds ahead of me. I'm okay with it, he said he ran track in college and he was flying!  I had a great time, definitely will be pursuing some more this year! I am hoping for an age group placement, as of now, I am in the #1 spot for 20-29 yrs, and had the 4th fastest time overall. Great day.

Congratulations on your first race, you did really well.  I know for my first tri I kept saying to people 'you call this fun' but now I do half ironmans and I have a ball.

On a trainer that you put your own bike on, I am much slower. On the fancy set ups at the gym I am much faster. That's probably not much help is it

Well I have had a good week of training, went for a ride today, 65km and it absolutely poured with rain on me.  Ran 12.5km yesterday which was great, we had 3 ships into port as well which was a great sight.

I am quite the opposite with a really poor last couple weeks of training.  Between vacation and a really heinous work week last week, I'm feeling like a bit of a slug.  But, I hit the training "reset" this week and get to pretend like those last two weeks didn't happen

So how's everyone else doing these days?

Starting to get back in the swing a little. I am going to set down with soccer schedules, vacations and other events and try and work out some kind of race schedule this week so I think that will help.

House warming party is over and all family visitors are done for a while.  Time to get back into the swing of things.

15 weeks until my first tri this summer.  No more messing around.

Was feeling physically completely drained so took 5 days off training last week.  Sunday I road 42 miles in really crappy weather.  Temps in the mid 40s with 20-25 mph sustained winds and gusts much higher.  At least I was smart enough to take my aero wheels off and through the factory wheels back on so the bike was a bit more managable.  Had a good swim Monday but had a breakthrough swim today.  First, I finally finished 650 yards with no stopping.  Still a lot of breast stroke thrown in but finished just fine.  My first sprint I'm planning has a 600 meter swim so I'm good on distance.  After that I was working on my TI drills and about 1/2 way through something seemed to click and it started feeling better.  Finished up with 8x25 yard freestyle repeats and 4 x 50 yard freestyle repeats and still felt great.  On top of all that, my calf has been feeling great after straining it.  Next week will be the 6 weeks I was told not to run on it so I'm looking forward to starting some jogging again in a few days.

Sounds like the time off allowed you to recharge a little bit.  Congrats on the breakthrough swim! Hope the running goes well when you start!

So Friday I set a PR with 2hrs 20min run. I did 15.25 miles. That is the longest I have ever ran. I was a little soar after, but very happy to have finish. The last 20 mins was brutal.

New Idea!  I'm still hovering around 195lbs. and seem to have plateaued. I'm starting to think I should eat a little more, put on 10 lbs., and enter my races as a Clydesdale. It just seems much easier. Thoughts?? LOL!

Does anyone have an motivational material. I am burnt out. Work has been crazy busy and I haven't been getting any training in. I have 6 weeks until IMSG. I'm starting to get very nervous and scared with the missing training and facing a full IM is crazy! I need to get excited again.
