Picked up my new Ordu at the bike shop (not completely happy like normal to get new bike...frame was ruined by Federal Express last month so I had to get parts moved to a new frame), drove down to Lakeville and rode the new course today.

Course is very similar but changes just after you cross 140 on S Kingman, then you switch to the Cranberry course for about 10 miles, once you make the climb on Long Pond, instead of going right at Cranberry onto Marion, you go left and make a loop then get back on Marion, then right on North that turns into 18.

New parts of course are good...maps on line are fantastic almost to much detail

Two tight turns...

at 13.52 miles right turn onto Old Powder House Road...fast downhill with right turn ...this is same hill you do on Cranberry then you have to make a left at bottom and they have many volunteers manning this corner...for Patriot you will be turning right before the bottom of the hill

at 20.69 miles or 21.12 onto Millar is tight turn that road is banked strange and you will have some speed

I thought there were no hills.

For MA and where I ride this course is less hilly and pretty flat. Depends on how you define hills.  The new section is flatter than what it replaced.

I define the course more rolling not hillly.

x2 with Kathy

I will say that 99% of the "hills" are rolling hills.

There is one big hill (very short).

If you ride on 9W like i think you do, this course has NO hills to speak of, it is much different terrain that what you or I train on on normal occasions.  I would say it is similar in terrain to Central Park if memory serves me correct, lotsa rollers, one climb (harlem hill). the elevation Chart shows 550' +/- per loop (28 miles). you get that in 15 miles from NY to NJ.

someone from Mass, please correct me if i am wrong.

I HATE HILLS

I LOVE THIS COURSE

There is NO need for ANYONE to fear this course.  I'm hoping to get out there soon and I'll provide a full and honest report from the point of view of a member of the back-of-the-paceline crew

Ok.  That's pretty flat. I just heard the word hills in the last few posts and I got spooked.  I hate hills, but those are mounds.

I'm hoping to get a recon ride in myself, but thanks for everyone that posted details about the bike course.  Sounds very fast and fun to me.  Really looking forward to this one.

Rode the entire course today (but started from the Cranberry transition area, not the actual Patriot start). My Garmin 705 says the elevation gain was ~1,800 ft (which is the equivalent distance adjusted elevation gain for The Flattest Century in The East).

Translation: it is about as flat as it gets for this part of the world.

Training is going well but ... that 1/2 marathon at the end should be "interesting" for me :-) Rudy, if you want to have dinner in the area on Friday night, let me know.

Training is going good for a fat old guy! Still a little freaked out about my nutrition, I haven't quite dialed in on eating and drinking enough!

Hope to meet some of you! very excited for my first HIM! Life insurance is paid up so I'm good!

I am ready for my first HIM!  I hope the weather will be nice.  Can't wait for this rain to stop so I can train outside again.

For anyone who knows this race - I have a question about the water stations for the bike. It says I need to throw a bottle to get a bottle.

I usually supply all of my own nutrition/fluids for a HIM but will get a bottle of water and drink some, pour some on myself, and the chuck the balance.

Is this going to be an issue?

I am staying there also, i have to figure out the schedule with my wife as her and my 16 month old are coming to cheer, babies bedtime is 7:30, and i am sure no one wants a toddler annoying them the day before the race. (she is actually quite well behaved, but like daddy has her moments).

Rencor, "chuck the balance" sounds like littering on the course which would most definitely be a problem so please don't do that if what you are chucking is an old water bottle.

Here's how the water bottle exchange stations are set up...

At each station there will be small soccer net set up so that you can toss an old water bottle. This frees up one of the water bottle cages on your bike. The net is set up as a way to help keep all the discarded water bottles in a consolidated spot. After discarding your water bottle you'll come upon volunteers that will be distributing either water in Poland Spring sports water bottles or Heed in Hammer Nutrition branded water bottles. The volunteers will be calling out what they have so you know what to grab. You won't have to stop to do this but we don't want you hammering by either (the bottle exchange stations are actually on a small incline to help slow riders down). The volunteers will jog along side of you and hand you the water bottle for you to put in your spare cage and off you go.
