Has anyone done this race before?  How are the trails ?  I tried to sign up for the red rock rumble but did not realize it sold out so quickly.

I have done it the last two years, doing it again this year.  It's my favorite trail race.  It's a nice course, rolling hills, lots of fun.  I highly recommend the race, well organized, nice shirt too.

I did this race last year and, for the most part, agree with Karen.

The only downside is that there is a HUGE bottleneck about 1/2 mile into the course.  I think I was literally standing still for a full minute and just barely walking for the next minute waiting for a group that was 6 people wide trying to funnel onto a single track trail.  Last year this bothered me b/c I was not expecting it.  This year I won't care and I'll just enjoy the race.

If you want to PR just make sure you are at the front of the pack at the start so you don't get caught up in the bottleneck.

I thought as far as trail races go this was an easy one. Like Sluggo says though if you want to get out in front then you need to line up at the front and be prepared to go pretty fast. We had about a half mile of open road to jockey for place but once you hit the trail it can be hard to pass. I was in a tight line for about the first 3 miles before it felt like it thinned a little. It was stressful to have to keep the pace but it made me push myself.

As NegSplit said about this race it is about as easy as you could expect for this kind of race. There are some hills around mile 10 - 12  and from mile 20 - 23... these seem easy  on the first lap but not so easy on the the second lap if you are doing the full marathon.

All in all its a real good race for a first time marathoin!!!

What is the normal "trail" pace as compared to a road pace?  I have never run a trail 1/2 marathon before but wanted to understand what type of goal I should be targeting for this race.

Well it all depends on how technical the course is but I typically am about 1:00 to 1:30 min/mile slower than on the road.  Others can probably chime in as well with their experience.  For me though, the mileage goes by a lot faster even though I tend to go slower.

Great race yesterday, the weather was perfect!  Hope everyone that did this race enjoyed the day.  (Oh, and another really nice shirt.  Tim did a great job with the entire event.)
