Colorado Masters Running/Racewalking Association

Total Time = 40m 13s
Overall Rank = 48/98
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Hooked up with Greyhound to go lay out the course, mark some of the turns and break up some of the ice.
Event warmup:

Course set up
  • 40m 13s
  • 5 miles
  • 08m 02s  min/mile

Went to the start and seeded myself back in the pack. Took 13 seconds just to get to the start line. Narrow path for the first 3/4 mile for the number of people. I believe I lost 30 seconds on that mile just in traffic. Second guessing my start seeding. Felt good going the second mile. Started warming up to the turnaround. Kept pace on the next half mile back but working more. In the 4th mile, I just didn't have it to keep going. Walked a minute to recover and then got going again. Let 5 people go by me in that stretch and just stayed ahead of the sixth. Didn't keep the pace I had before picked up one or two of those but then going into the last mile one went back by me and I just didn't have it to stay with him. In the last 1/4 another went by and I just tried to keep it together to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Not start so far back, get a better warm up, strip down to the proper layers to race in. I ended up wearing what I would have for a training run in the temperatures when I arrived, not for the temps of when race actually started.
Post race
Warm down:

got a drink got in the van and went home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Crashed on black ice as I was heading out on the bike to mark some of the start/finish loop before the race. Was concerned I broke my elbow and or wrist. Didn't know if I would run or what I would have so I didn't go through my warm up, didn't drop the layers, didn't have it mentally to push through the pain - was it the pain of the run or the pain and concern I was trying to block out
Was it broken? Severely bruised, doc didn't x-ray cuz by Thurs had decent strength and mobility (big change Wed night - yeah God) but here it is March 8 and I still have pain in it. Also all the colors just cleared up last weekend.

Nice job especially considerring the fall you had beforehand!  Had that not happened you probably would have been sub-8s.  Hopefully the elbow is doing better.  It's been years since I've run a CMRA event.  One of these days I need to get out there.
